Post the things you've always wondered about or your random thoughts and see if someone can answer it.

Like:
How do those 'Keep Off The Grass' signs get there?

It can be totally random!

Some of my favourites:

When French people swear, do they say pardon my English?

Why did Yankee Doodle name the feather in his hat 'Macaroni'?

Why don't the hairs on your arms get split ends?

In that song, "She'll be coming around the mountain", who is she?

How come we say "It's colder than hell outside" when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

Why is it when we talk to God we are praying, but when God talks to us we are put into the loony bin?

Why is 'Charlie' short for 'Charles' if they are both the same number of letters?

Why is Donkey Kong called 'DONKEY Kong' if he's an ape?

"Why did Yankee Doodle name the feather in his hat 'Macaroni'?"

Back in the originating time period of the song (some time in the 1700's), a 'macaroni' (in England) was a dandy (rather foppish man) who took on mannerisms considered Continental. Basically, the man being called a 'macaroni' was one who thought he was stylin' but he was just a fool.

As far as how it relates to Yankee Doodle Dandy, that song was the Brits making fun of the Yankees (although, why they would mock a baseball team is beyond me).

"What did cured ham actually have?"

Curing is a process used to preserve food. So, my guess would be that the ham was cured of the possibility of going bad quickly. :-)

Okay, one more, and then I'm done.

"What was Captian Hook's name before he had a hook for a hand?"

In the original novel, Captain Hook was called Captain Hook even before his hand was...erm... non-surgically removed.

Cheddar =)

(When French people swear, do they say pardon my English? )

They simply would not speak or use the word 'English')

Cheers to all our French sleuthers ;)

yeah...but why the hell do English speakers say 'pardon my French' when they swear in English anyways?

'Phoque' (pronounce it carefully, please) just means "seal", y'know?

Also: what's the deal with hot dogs coming in 12-packs and buns coming in 8-packs? Don't pigs eat wheat??? What the phoque???

And, Violt, I must respectfully disagree. The moon is CLEARLY made of gorgonzola...see the blue veins? Them's where it keeps the space age-flavour :)

Just realised that I've been wondering for some time about Mary Jane shoes - who was Mary Jane?

Am now convinced I've found a split end on a hair on my arm. Maybe it's just the light.

From Wikipedia, the site where you can find pretty much anything:

"Mary Jane was a character created by the Brown Shoe Company. Mary Jane would often tag along with Buster Brown, another marketing character by the Brown Shoe Company."
