I headed over to the Tricky Mister Bar. The place was crowded with chatting locals, as always.

Lurking near the back, I could make out the shape of one of the bar's regulars. He was the local fixer, and it seemed like every city had one, if you knew where to look. An unpleasant person to deal with, but one who was sometimes necessary.

Before Becky departed from Barry, she made him clarify how many a "few hours" were. Barry told her around 3 or 4 hours because he believed he was just visiting with his sister and her family. When he got there, he was surprised by Andrea and that made his visit much longer than anticipated. Barry wanted to discuss family related things with Betty but not in front of Andrea. So, after Andrea left, Barry stayed another 2 hours talking to Betty. And because Becky was so far out of his mind, he lost track of the time.

Becky, meanwhile, freshened herself up and went down to The Tricky Mister so that she would be there if Barry arrived in 3 hours instead of 4. During that time, a man known to some as Jake Fenton, came in for a drink. He spotted Becky because she was very hard to miss and was immediately struck by her beauty. He could tell she was waiting for someone because she started checking her watch pretty often and was shifting around in her seat with annoyance.

Jake decided to make his move. He walked over to Becky's table and said, "Miss, I just want you to know that whoever the Joe Zilch is that stood you up is probably the dumbest man on the planet."

Becky looked up and saw a rather striking young man with fierce blue eyes and wavy black hair. She was only a little distracted by his chiseled features when she replied, "I'll have you know that the man I am waiting for is no Joe Zilch and if he's not here there's a very good reason."

Jake was used to defensive women and he could see the fire in this one. "Well, I'm sure there must be a very good reason because I cannot imagine any man purposely standing you up." He extended his hand. "My name is Jacob Fennesey." Jake said as he smoothly took the seat opposite her. "But you can call me Jake."

Becky was slightly annoyed that this strange man was being presumptuous and taking a seat at her table. She was about to object when she realized that this could work in her favor. If Barry walked in and found her sitting with another handsome man she thought it might stir up some jealousy in Barry. "Mr. Fennesey, it's very nice to meet you." Becky shook his hand. "I'm Rebecca Franks but you can call me Becky."

Jake instantly recognized the name from the article about Barry's disappearance. He thought to himself, "So this is the woman he was going to meet. She's probably someone special to him. This could be a lucky break but I have to be sure this was the one in the article."

Jake's charm was was his second greatest asset. It opened doors and loosened lips. Soon he and Becky were laughing and actually having a very good time. At some point she looked at her watch again and muttered under her breath "Where are you, Barry?" Jake heard this and started asking questions.

"So, 'Barry' is the name of your Joe Zilch."

"I told you, he must have a very good reason. Barry Grant has never stood me up without a reason less significant than life or death."

At her mention of Barry's name, Jake knew he found gold. "You're waiting for Barry Grant? The detective?"

"Yes, do you know him?"

Jake thought quickly, "Yes, we worked together in Shanghai. I helped him out with a few of his tougher cases. Very nice fellow."

"Well, then, I'm sure he'll be glad to see you when he gets here. That's IF he gets here." Becky looked at her watch again. The last 2 hours chatting with Jake seemed to have flown by. "But I must say, I've enjoyed talking to you."

Jake smiled to himself and his mind began to race. "You know, I know where his appointment was tonight. It's only a few blocks from here. Why don't I escort you there and we'll see if we can find him."

Becky, relaxed and a little tipsy, said. "Oh, that would be great. Thanks." Jake rose and helped Becky out of her chair and into her coat. He then put his on and then offered his elbow to her. She was smiling as she took it and Jake escorted her out of the bar and into one of the darkest nights this city has ever seen.
