I have advanced thread analysis, but have found that at some crime scenes, I do not get the information if the thread belongs to a male or female. Is this normal, or is it a glitch?

Yes. The higher your smart adjustment from equipment is, the more likely you are to analyse the thread. It is otherwise pretty much random.

Even as a Smart archetype, and somewhere around +18 in smarts clothes, there are still times when I can't get information about a piece of evidence found at the crime scene.
