'Eet gets zem every time', Golly Maldorina (or little girl three as we have known her for this brief interval), one of HYDRAs most dangerous secret agents snickered. Her sisters Molly and Golly laughed also.

'Ze Canadians, zey are all speet and polish', Polly (little girl one) chimed.

'He was very preety though', Molly (little girl two) added meekly. Her sisters shook their heads.

From nearby came the muffled, yet distinctive voice of Yuri Lurkinfertrubl, 'Get me out of zis acursed garbage. I smell worse than ze English before their bath night.'

The girls looked at each other and giggled before trotting around the corner into a narrow alleyway where Yuri struggled to climb out of a rickety dumpster.

'You should pick ze escape routes more carefully Yuri', Golly said snidely.

'And you should mind ze manners young lady', Yuri snapped, waving a hooked hand under her nose, 'Last time I remember I was still ze head of zis family.'

Golly Maldorina bit her lip and nodded meekly, 'Yes Papa', she whispered.

......

Lol seemd a shame to kill Yuri off... pity I really did kill him off by forgetting his password :s

Unbelievable. A horse mounted Canadian Mountie in NYC. I think I've seen almost everything. Where's that blasted hotel?

New York City--

(At the War Department's Field Headquarters Complex....)

Admiral Peterson and Dave Adams looked up from the copies of the telegram from London each man had just been studying and looked at each other. Lou pinched the bridge of his nose over his glasses while Dave rubbed the back of his neck tiredly.

Dave sighed, "First the misinformation on Violet Parr, then the attack on Sahira, then the attempt to get to Grant by someone calling himself Arundel, now this." He rubbed his forehead and looked bleakly at Lou, "I'm beginning to wonder whose side the Broadway's Concierge is on."

Lou glared briefly at the telegram, then eyed Dave over his glasses, "I think it's about damned time we find out, don't you? Where'd our Indian boys get to, anyway?"

Dave set the paper on Lou's desk as he stood up wearily. "Daniel's down with the guy we picked up at the hotel. So far all all he's sayin' is that his name's Nathaniel Arundel, NOT Charles. Joseph's due up on the red-eye from the City tonight. Gabe's out tracking down Auguste Giron right now."

Lou nodded, "Okay, we'll let them have a crack at our reluctant detainees when Joe gets in. Go get that concierge."

Dave waved as he left Lou's Office....

(A few minutes later, back at the Department's Headquarters....)

Dave unlocked the solid steel door, opening it slowly and entering the barren room. Inside, a dark-haired, mustachioed man in prison garb wearing handcuffs sat at a rickety wooden table. A medium height, black haired, tanned skinned man stood next to him, speaking softly into his ear. The captive looked up at Dave's entrance, a desperate look on his face.

"Ah, good!" Dave remarked cheerfully, "I see you two have been getting acquainted."

"Please!" the prisoner cried anxiously, "Why am I here? I haven't done anything!"

Dave shook his head at him, "Tsk, tsk. Now we both know that's not true, don't we?" He smiled again at the man's confused look, "We both know you're not Nathaniel Arundel." He watched as the man paled slightly. "Which means that you've lied for starters." He walked over to the desk, thumbing through a file folder, "In fact, I'll do ya one better. I know that there is no Nathaniel Arundel at all." He looked down at the captive again, all traces of amiability gone from his face, "So, you wanna tell me who you really are?"

The man just stared at him, paling even more.

Dave shrugged, "Okay, I'll give you a bit to think about it. Dan and I are gonna go talk to a couple other people, then we'll be back to have a nice friendly chat." He grinned coldly at him, then nodded at the guard standing by the door.

'Nathaniel' was abruptly hauled up from his chair and dragged off to a neighboring cell down the hall. Dave and Dan headed next door to their next interview, the hotel's concierge, Henry....

In the room next door, Henry was already beginning to sweat, even though the room was unheated. Dave slammed the door back against the door, causing Henry to jump slightly in his seat. The guard sitting in the corner just looked up at Dave and Daniel coming into the room and yawned slightly, a supposedly bored expression on his face.

"Henry!" Dave beamed at him as he sat in the other chair at the battered wooden table where Snyder was sitting. His grin turned into a mock frown of concern, "You don't look good there, Bud. You okay?"

Henry tried to loosen the collar of his shirt again in vain, "Why am I here, Mr. Adams?" he squeaked nervously.

"Actually, Henry, it's Captain," Dave replied. He opened the file folder he'd laid on the table and glanced over his shoulder. "You haven't met the Lieutenant here, have you?" He nodded at Daniel. "This is Daniel Stark, and yes, he is Indian," he said as he noticed Henry's widening eyes, "He's Cheyenne, to be precise. Daniel, say hello to our guest, Mr. Henry Snyder, your friendly neighborhood concierge."

Daniel glared coolly at him with deep brown eyes and grunted lowly. Henry seemed to shrivel in his chair and sweated even more.

"Y'see, Henry," Dave continued, "My people have just a couple of questions that we need answered that we're kinda puzzled about. We've had an exclusive contract with your fine establishment for almost ten years now. Almost as long as you've been employed there, yes?" Dave smiled genially at him.

Henry nodded slowly, a vein in his temple beginning to throb slowly.

Dave thumbed through the papers in the file folder, and pulled one out, sliding it across the table to Henry. "Well, we're somewhat curious how this woman checked into your hotel, and you didn't inform us? We sent out bulletins about her to every hotel, boarding house, and lodging place in the City. And surprise, surprise, the one place she picks is the very place that the U.S. Government puts up all their most elite and protected clients at.” Dave looked up at him, a puzzled look on his face, “That’s a pretty strange coincidence, Henry.” He cut off Henry’s blustering response, “More importantly, when you GOT the notice, you didn’t call.”

Dave rested his chin on the elbow that was bent on the table, “How’d THAT happen, Henry?” Dave leaned forward even more, “And then, to top things off even more bizarrely, someone on your staff tries to delay the young lady’s stay for at least two days, ultimately ending with a man trying to assassinate said young woman. Only problem is, Henry, the moron didn’t get his target.” Dave SLAMMED his fist down on the table, causing Henry to jump several inches back away from the table. “He got one of MY people instead, which makes me just a little bit p***ed, Henry!” He threw another picture across the table at the other man. This one showed the wire garotte marks gouging across Sahira’s throat. “Daniel and I are both rather fond of the young woman that thug tried to kill, Henry,” Dave growled. “So we are GOING to find out what happened, one way or another.”

Dave leaned back in his chair again, the epitome of nonchalance. “The only question, really, is how cooperative you’re going to be about answering. You give us the information we need, you’ll be back behind your desk before sundown. You start lyin’ to us, and Daniel’s gonna get cranky.” Dave casually gathered up the papers scattered around the table. “So…I’ll just leave you and Daniel to have a nice chat.” He rose from his seat and headed for the door.

“You can’t do this! I’m an American!” Henry protested, his face turning bright red.

Daniel smirked at that, and exchanged a smug look with Dave. “Funny you should say that, Henry,” Dave retorted. “So’s Daniel. But he doesn’t have much use for white-man’s law; he keeps throwing the book out the window, so to speak. I’ll hafta do somethin’ bout that one of these days. Anyway, you two have a good time. I won’t wait up.”

He headed for the door, calling over his shoulder, “You’ll look after our guest, won’t you, Fred?”

Fred blinked mock-indifferently, his gaze focused on a speck on the wall over Henry’s shoulder, “You bet, Boss.”

Back upstairs, Dave was met at his Office by Annie diNapoli, a fellow intelligence officer. She handed him two reports and a telegram, “These came in while you were downstairs.” She pointed to the telegram, “Lou’s down in D.C. today, so you get to deal with this.”

Dave nodded as he quickly scanned the decoded message from England, then swore softly under his breath.

Annie glanced at the notepad in her hand, “I’ve already assigned two teams to try and track her down through the usual entry points into New York. Nothing yet.”

Dave nodded, “Okay, thank you. Let’s get two more teams out and start coming hotels again. She’s gotta be staying somewhere, and we know she tends to like the ritzier places, so let’s have ‘em start there.”

Annie scribbled a note down on her pad. “Will do. The top report’s from our hospital on Sahira’s assassin. Seems the guy’s finally conscious and stable. He should be able to be interrogated anytime we want to talk to him. The second’s the daily briefing.” She handed him a third file, “This also came for you from Mercy Hospital.”

Dave nodded at that, then glanced through the second medical report, “Holy….!” He looked at Annie for a second, stunned, then looked back at the report.

“What is it?” she asked anxiously.

Dave reached for his briefcase and began throwing various files and reports into it that had been scattered about on his desk. He tossed the medical report on top and banged it shut. “Who’s on duty escorting Breit?” he asked Annie curtly.

Her eyes widened at his abruptness, “Will’s on guard with her, but Todd just called in from the Plaza. She just came in there about fifteen minutes ago. She should still be there.”

“Good,” Dave replied, “Get on the horn. Don’t let her leave. I’ll be at the Plaza if anyone needs me.” He headed for the door.

“Dave!” Annie yelled after him, “What’s wrong, fer Pete’s sake?!”

A delighted feminine shriek echoed down the hallway....

On the Northern Edge of New York City

The Pfeiffer Estate

Breit and Dave's Cottage, the former Carriage House of the Manor

Dave hung up the phone and rubbed his hand over his face wearily. He looked over to find Breit watching him sleepily.

"That was Barry?" she asked, yawning.

"Yep," he replied, "Omega forwarded his call here. He thinks his friend Rebecca Franks is in trouble. He was s'pposed to meet up with her at the Tricky Mister, and apparently, she left with somebody. He's worried about her. I'm goin' to meet him now."

Breit sat up quickly, all traces of drowsiness vanished, "Is this the blonde that tried to sneak in to see him at the hospital?"

Dave nodded as he tugged on his pants, "I think so, yes."

Breit threw back the covers and reached for her dress.

Dave eyed her warily, "What're you doin'?"

Breit looked back at him, smiling slightly as she buttoned up the placket on her shirtwaist, "I'm gettin' dressed so you can drop me off at Omega on your way to meet Barry."

Dave skipped his tie, and picked up his jacket, "Okayyy...but you don't need to wait up for me, y'know."

Breit smiled at him again, "I know, Cher, but that woman's a hustler and a floozy, and the only person she's looking out for is number one. I doubt she even gives much of a damn about Barry. I may just get in your way, but there's no way in God's Green Hell I'm waitin' on the sidelines while she gets more of our people killed. I'll go work at Omega, and you'll be able to go do what you need to do."

Dave watched her for a moment, then helped her into her coat, "Okay, Brie, but please don't be up all night. You will try and get some sleep, yes?"
