Built in 1880, near the beginning of the Gilded Age, its mahogany walls were still in very good condition. The gilding on the marble columns was just starting to peel and the imported Oriental rugs did show some wear but all in all a very nice place to stay.

Many important people have stayed there due to the excellent food, courteous service, and a certain amount of discretion afforded by the management. Many important people still do, however due to the unwillingness of the management to cooperate with the press, this cannot be confirmed.

The hotel's low profile helps keep it a bit obscure which is what attracts the rich, powerful, and those who want to hide in style.

Barry watched his doctor hug Breitkat. It was a touching scene and it was apparent that they hadn't seen each other in awhile. It was difficult to watch when all he wanted to do was get the OK from Dave that he had a clean bill of health and he can get back to helping out with HYDRA. But Barry has patience so he waited.

While he waited he watched the cat skulk around the edges of the room sniffing every nook and cranny. He was amazed that this miniature Bengal Tiger was as tame as it was. When Missy finally reached Barry's bed, he reached out his hand with his palm down to let her sniff him. Apparently, he passed her test because she licked him and then continued on her way around the room.

Barry looked from Max to Rosie to Doreen and they all looked at each other and shrugged. They all were waiting for Breit and Dave to finish saying their hellos.

Dave felt Breit tremble, and loosened his embrace, looking down at her. She raised her hand to her mouth, swallowing heavily. "Your stomach again, Babe?" he whispered.

She nodded, closing her eyes again.

He gathered her up and carried her to a chair, kneeling down beside her. Continuing to ignore everyone's questions and protests, he reached into his coat pocket and dug out a couple calcium antacids and handed them to her. While she ate them, he whispered the results of the medical tests into her ear.

She dropped the roll of antacids. "You're sure?" she murmured.

He nodded.

"How long?" she asked in disbelief.

"The tests indicate about the beginning of December," he replied softly, "You're due sometime about the end of August or the beginning of September."

They both looked down at her abdomen. Then Breit felt another wave of nausea roil up, and covered her mouth quickly, her gaze flying desperately to Dave.

"You had anything to eat or drink recently, Sweet?" he asked her as he laid his hand gently across her forehead.

She shook her head slightly, "Wasn't 'ungry," she mumbled.

He kissed her temple, then turned around slightly to the other women, "Doreen, Rosie, can you ladies get me some magnesium antacid out of the medical kit and get some dry toast and some lemon-lime soda from room service? We've gotta get Breit's stomach calmed down."

Barry came up off the bed, "What's wrong with her? And why haven't you been around here to check on me?"

Dave frowned slightly, "She's a little bit sick at the moment. I'm sorry I haven't been by to check on you; I've been a little busy. If there'd been a problem, Rosie or Doreen would have let me know, and I'd have come straight away. Besides, the rest has done you good."

"Will she be all right?" Barry asked again, watching Breit.

Dave sighed, "She'll be fine. We just need to be supportive with her, and not cause her a lot of tension."

"Why?" Barry asked, confused.

Breit looked up at Dave, her expression pleading. "It's okay. Just tell him. Please.”

Dave looked over again at Barry, his frown deepening, "She's enceinte, Barry."

Rosie and Doreen gasped in surprise, then jumped to get the medicine and food at Dave's eagle-eyed glare.

"Enceinte?" Barry repeated, puzzled.

Dave groaned, bowing his head to rest against Breit's for a moment. "Breit's pregnant, Barry," he said as he kissed her temple gently, "She's having some morning sickness right now. It's a typical problem for women in this condition for the first few months."

Barry's jaw dropped as understanding dropped, "Oh my God! I'm sorry, I had NO idea!" He hurriedly gathered up the pillows stacked up on his bed and handed them to Dave. "Here, give her these! What else can I do to help?"

Dave took one pillow, positioning it behind Breit's back and pressing her deeper into the wing chair. She leaned back slightly, closing her eyes again.

"Nothing right now, Barry. I'll have a look at you as soon as Breit's okay."

Doreen handed Dave a small blue bottle, which he opened and pressed to Breit's lips, "Here, Love, two swallows, please."

She did, wrinkling her nose at the chalky taste, then laid her back against the chair's headrest again. Dave laid his hand against her forehead again.

After several minutes, she opened her eyes again and smiled up at him. Dave was still watching her, a worried frown on his face, "How ya doin', Babe?"

She shrugged slightly, smiling, "Little better, I guess," she whispered.

"Is she going to be all right?" Barry called.

"I'm okay, Barry," Breit reasurred him softly, "My stomach's just a little shook up, that's all."

The doorbell rang in the Sitting Room of the suite. "Food's here," Rosie cried, "I'll get it."

Dave kissed her forehead and helped her sit up as Rosie carried a tray into the bedroom. Missy bounded up to the wing chair, eager for a treat. He pushed the cat away, ignoring her eager 'Mwrror's.

Dave turned to examine Barry while Breit nibbled on the toast and sipped the lemonade. Dave pulled a stethoscope and an ophthalmoscope out of the large medical bag, and crossed over to Barry's side.

"So, Grant, I hear you're climbin' the walls to get outta here. What, the nurses aren't good lookin' enough for you?" He leaned over and peered into Barry's right eye with the scope, "I can always send over a couple ugly corpsmen to keep you company. That should cheer you right up." He ignored Barry's groan and gently probed his eyelid and brow with his fingertip. He frowned slightly as he palpated the skin just above Barry's eye, "Uh huh," he muttered.

He then slipped on the stethoscope and listened to Barry's chest. After several seconds, he pressed his hand lightly against various places on Barry's rib cage. "That hurt?" he asked. Barry shook his head. Dave pressed a little harder, with similar results. He then turned to Rosie, "Help me get these wraps off of him, please." Together, Dave and Rosie unwound the bandages encircling Barry's chest. He listened to Barry's heart and lungs with the scope again for a bit, then pressed lightly against several spots on his rib cage. "Any pain?" Dave asked. Barry shook his head, but when Dave pushed a little harder in two spots, he groaned in pain. "Um hmm," Dave murmured.

Dave turned away to put his instruments, then back to explain his findings to Barry.

"So can I get outta here, Doc?" Barry asked eagerly.

Dave rubbed his jaw thoughtfully, "Your ribs are doing well, and you can do without the bandages from now on. But you're not completely healed yet, so be careful. Try not to get into any fistfights if you can help it, okay?" He frowned slightly, "Your eye's a little different story. There seems to be a bit of nerve damage to your right eyelid. It's drooping a bit more than I'd like. I'd like to send you down to see a specialist at Walter Reed and have them take a look at you.

"It's nothing especially serious, but ophthamology isn’t my specialty, and I think you should have an expert look at it. So, can you get out of here? If you want to, yes. You’re fit enough to be up and around. I can’t stop you from leaving town and going back to work. I’m advising you, as your doctor, that it would be a good idea to have someone take a look at your eye, and the United States has the best experts in the world.”

He sighed tiredly, glancing briefly at Breit, “As the head of your security team, I’ll continue to provide you with protection as long as you remain in the U.S., regardless of where you go. You won’t need nursing anymore, so Rosie and Doreen are free to go for now.” He nodded to them.

Doreen and Rosie smiled at them. Rosie helped him back into bed, smoothing the covers over him, adjusting a pillow behind his head, and smoothing the hair off his brow. She smiled brightly at him, “I’m gonna head next door and try and go back to sleep for a couple hours. Knowing the Boss, he’ll probably be drafting me into some boring surveillance gig.” She patted his shoulder, and winked at him, “I’ll check on you in a couple hours, okay?” She giggled at his beaming smile. With a final grin, she and Doreen strolled out to the Sitting Room of the suite.

Dave quirked an eyebrow as he watched Rosie leave with Doreen, then he turned to Breit. “How’s the toast, Cherie?”

She scowled at him, “Yummy, but at least it seems to be staying down.”

He grinned at her, “Good.” He came over to her and lifted her up in his arms.

She grimaced slightly, “I can walk, y’know. You don’t have to carry me.”

He smiled adoringly at her, “True, but pampering you is much more fun. Besides, I need the practice.” He winked at her giggle, and held her closer to him, feeling her relax into his body. He turned to nod a farewell to Barry, “Barry, let me know what you want to do about your eye. And remember, no half-nelsons.” With that, he strode out to the Sitting Room, whistling for Missy as he left.

The tiger, which had been snuffling an unusual scent in a far corner of the bedroom, took a flying leap and bounded over the width of Barry’s bed with a couple of feet to spare at Dave’s call. Barry shrank back into the pillows as the cat sailed over his midsection, astounded at the sheer power of the animal.

Max just watched placidly as Missy bounced out the door after her master and mistress.

“Did you see that?!” Barry exclaimed.

Max laughed, “Yep.”

“And you’re not surprised?” he asked, astounded.

Max chuckled again, “Nope. Most of us at the Department learned two things a long time ago. One, don’t ever mess with the Boss’ lady. And second, don’t mess with the lady’s cat. You won’t live long enough to regret either one if you do.” He winked at Barry, “I’ll be outside if you need anything, Mr. Grant.” And with that, the burly guard was gone....

Barry was still in amazment after Max left. The room was strangely quiet compared to only a few minutes ago. But Barry was glad to get the green light from the doctor.

Barry got out of bed and began dressing. He was curious about the sudden attention he was getting from Rosie. "Nah, she's probably trying to make a good impression with the doctor." he thought.

He looked at his reflection in the mirror. The first thing he noticed was his dire need for a shave and a haircut. The second thing he noticed was that droopy right eye lid. "Gee, it looks like I'm in mid wink with that eye." It gave him a jaunty look that didn't look all that bad. "Maybe I should first see how people respond to me looking like this."

Barry finished dressing and made some phone calls. The last one to his sister who, of course, insisted he come over right away for a home cooked meal. He told her he'd be there in an hour after his shave and haircut and headed out to his favorite barber.

Of course, leaving the hotel by the front entrance will take him past the restaurant where Becky is....

Just as Becky was about to place her order with the waiter, she saw Garry look past her and stiffen up. She asked him what was wrong. Garry leaned in closer to her and whispered, "It's Barry! He's leaving the hotel!"

"What?!" Becky spun her head around to see Barry leaving. She immediately got up to follow him but was stopped by Garry pulling on her wrist.

"Where do you think you're going?" he said.

Becky was annoyed, "I'm going after him! I didn't work this hard to let him get away now!" Garry let her go and watched her leave the restaurant. He looked up at the waiter who was still waiting for Becky's order and said, "I'll pay now."

Meanwhile, Becky managed to catch up to Barry before he reached the barber's. "Barry? Is that you?" she faked.

Barry, hearing the familiar voice behnd him, stopped in his tracks and dropped his shoulders in exasperation. He didn't turn around because he knew who it was and that she would make the effort to catch up to him.

"Barry, sweetie, what a coincidence!" Becky feigned surprise. "How are you?" By this time, Becky had not only caught up to Barry, but managed to position herself in front of him to block his way.

"Becky" he said stoically.

"Barry! So nice to see..." she trailed off when she saw his eye. "..you." She instantly liked the near wink it appeared to be doing. "Where are you going? May I join you?"

Barry's eye roll was barely noticeable. "I'm on my way to the barber. I'm sure that is of no interest to you."

"Au contraire, mon cher." Becky cooed. "J'ai interesse de tout que tu fais." She remembered how Barry was always responsive when she spoke French and moved next to him to slip her arm through his. "Je suis enchantee de t'accompagner." She started dragging Barry along because she knew where his favorite barber was. His patience was running thin but, being the gentleman that he was, would not make a scene in public. He walked with her to the barber all the while thinking about how he can get rid of her once and for all. All efforts in the past have apparently been fruitless.

He especially didn't want her to find out he was on his way to his sister's. Becky and Betty always got along so well. Betty would welcome Becky even if she was unexpected. The whole way to the barber, Becky chatted up Barry about what was going on in her life assuming Barry would be interested. Barry bided his time. Becky didn't stop talking even through his hair cut and shave.

When the barber was done, Barry knew he had to prevent her from following him to his sister's. "Becky? I have an appointment now that I cannot miss but I would very much like to catch up with you." Barry lied, "How about meeting me in a few hours at the Tricky Mister?"

That seemed to satisfy Becky so she agreed to it and went home to freshen up for what she assumed was going to be the date she's been waiting for. Barry headed for his sister's trying to come up with a new tactic that Becky would understand. By the time he arrived at his sister's he had it all worked out.
