Built in 1880, near the beginning of the Gilded Age, its mahogany walls were still in very good condition. The gilding on the marble columns was just starting to peel and the imported Oriental rugs did show some wear but all in all a very nice place to stay.

Many important people have stayed there due to the excellent food, courteous service, and a certain amount of discretion afforded by the management. Many important people still do, however due to the unwillingness of the management to cooperate with the press, this cannot be confirmed.

The hotel's low profile helps keep it a bit obscure which is what attracts the rich, powerful, and those who want to hide in style.

"Dear Barry:
I am sorry, darling, that I cannot stay in New York any longer. I must head back to London and attend to agency business.
I feel like I should apologize again for my reaction to Becky, but maybe I have done that enough. I have never been the type to compete for anyone's affections, and I am not sure I want to start now. Especially with Becky, who seems deteremined to weave herself back into your life.
I hope you recover soon, darling. You know where to find me.
Fondly,

AndreaX"

Barry read the note that was delivered by special messenger from AndreaX. He then started to think about the last time she was there and the argument they almost had because of Becky.

Barry remembered Andrea's tear soaked face complaining to him about how Becky never seems to leave him alone and how Barry explaining that he couldn't do anything about it. He then remembered Andrea bringing up Shanghai and how he was relentless in his pursuit of her. He didn't remember it quite like that.

He did remember it almost destroyed his friendship with Director Anstett. RAn told Barry he wasn't interested and then all of a sudden he seemed interested. When that was cleared up, Barry was free to get to know Andrea better. As Barry was thinking about that, his goofy grin reappeared as he recalled those times with her.

Then Barry remembered the letter in his hand. He always knew how dedicated she was to her job and to her agency and always made it clear he would never ask her to give it up for him. He started to wonder if there was any future for them because of that. He supposed he could move to London but Barry Grant Associates was being established in Shanghai and he really wanted to give it a chance.

Barry put the letter on the table beside his bed and sat back to contemplate his options. He closed his eyes and began to picture Andrea in his mind. How beautiful she was and how good she was at her job. He was proud of the work she did at her agency and how she's leading them. He was smiling when he fell asleep.

Across town, Becky was thinking about her own plans.

He walked into the hotel wondering if he would be welcomed if he showed up to visit his cousin. He entered the restaurant located in the hotel and took a seat at a private booth to wait for a woman he hadn't seen in a very long time. He hoped to find out what he would have to do to see Barry.

A beautiful blonde walked into the hotel for the second time. She went directly to the restaurant and scanned the crowd for the man she was meeting. She soon spotted Garry Grant and Garry spotted her. Garry motioned for her to join him so she went in and sat down opposite him.

"Hello, Garry. Long time, no see, huh? What have you been up to?"

Angel sits in the chair next to the phone, pen and paper at hand, she picks up the phone and dials R Anstett's room number.

Hello? Yes Ms. Angel I can meet with you. Perhaps tomorrow? will you be near the racetrack in Shanghai anytime soon? That might be a nice public place to meet. If not then I do suppose I could arrange a meeting with you to answer a few questions. Yes of course I know something of the matter.

I would look for someone who lurks in the shadows, who might take effect a persona of a mad woman, a crazy cat person perhaps. We can discuss this more in detail later when we get together.

"Becky, you know very well what I've been up to. I've been trying to work my way back into the family. When I got your letter I thought you might be able to get Barry to see me. He listens to you. So how about it? Do you think you can convince him?"

The waiter brought over the coffee Garry ordered earlier. "Can I get you something, Miss?"

Henry Snyder, Assistant Manager of the Broadway Plaza Hotel, looked up from studying the guest register and adjusted his collar slightly as he watched the three men come through the Lobby doors. The one in the lead smiled cheerfully at him as he came up to the desk.

"Henry, old man! You're looking well!" Dave exclaimed as he came around the counter, clapping the older man on the shoulder heartily. "How ya been?" he smiled cheerfully.

Henry cleared his throat a bit, smiling nervously. "I'm fine, Mr. Adams. How are you doing?"

Dave grinned, "Never better, Henry, never better!" He leaned a little closer to him, "Listen, I've got a bit of a problem. Was wondering if you can help me out at all?"

Henry smiled a little more confidently at that, "Oh. Sure, Mr. Adams. We're always happy to help you and your people."

Dave beamed down at the shorter man, "That's great, Henry!" He nodded at one of his associates, patiently waiting on the other side of the counter. "Todd here's gonna look after your desk for a little while. We need to ask you a couple little-bitty questions, then you'll be back here in no time flat. That okay with you, Henry?" Dave smiled expectantly.

Henry's growing smile died slowly, "Um, I don't think I can leave the desk right now, Mr. Adams."

Dave's grip on his shoulder tightened slightly, his smile turning wolfish, "Why, Henry! You don't have anything to hide from me, do you?"

Henry shook his head quickly, stammering, "No, no, no, of course not, Mr. Adams. Nothing like that."

Dave grinned slyly at him, "Good!" He crooked a finger at Todd, who came around the desk, looking instantly at home there. "Don't worry, Henry. Todd'll take good care of this place for you, won't ya, Todd?" At Todd's smiling 'Yessir', Dave clapped Henry on the shoulder again, "Well, Henry, shall we?"

Henry hung his head slightly, but preceded Dave into the Lobby and out the front doors of the hotel....
