Built in 1880, near the beginning of the Gilded Age, its mahogany walls were still in very good condition. The gilding on the marble columns was just starting to peel and the imported Oriental rugs did show some wear but all in all a very nice place to stay.

Many important people have stayed there due to the excellent food, courteous service, and a certain amount of discretion afforded by the management. Many important people still do, however due to the unwillingness of the management to cooperate with the press, this cannot be confirmed.

The hotel's low profile helps keep it a bit obscure which is what attracts the rich, powerful, and those who want to hide in style.

Barry paused for a moment to contemplate the question. He remembered sitting at the Tricky Mister drinking a Tom Collins before meeting Becky to, yet again, tell her it was over between them. He remembered leaving the bar and then somewhere around 40th and 11th he was jumped. He didn't see them coming at all.

"Well, I remember I was nabbed off the street. But the next thing I remember is being in the dark tied to a chair with my head aching and the taste of blood in my mouth. I had trouble opening my eyes but managed to get one open enough to take a look around. I could just make out the broom closet I was in and then I heard noises from outside the door."

Barry paused for a moment to collect his thoughts then continued. "I heard a foreign lanugage which at first didn't recognize. I can understand a little French but this was a more gutteral sound. Occasionally, the phone would ring and they would speak in English. Eventually, someone came in and put a sack over my head and then I felt I was being carried out. "

"I guess I was put into some sort of van or truck, still tied up in that chair, by the way. When we got to the next destination, I was carried out and brought into what I thought was a large warehouse based upon the echoes off the walls." Barry stopped there. The rest of the story got stuck in his throat as he remembered the rest.

She wrote this down as he told her what he remembered.

Angel said, "If it's too painful to remember the events, I will ask you other questions, but please continue."

Barry appreciated the compassion and he continued. "Miss Angel, it's not that it's too painful, it's a little gruesome. I would rather not go into such details with a lady like yourself." Barry continued but kept some of the details to himself. No lady should hear them.

"When they got me to the warehouse, they removed the sack from my head and I found there were 4 men surrounding me. They were asking me questions but the questions were in their language. I couldn't answer them. They seemed to get annoyed by this. I told them I didn't understand what they were saying but for some reason they didn't believe me. My guess is that they thought I was someone else pretending not to understand."

"Eventually, they had enough of my refusing to answer and started working me over. I was barely conscious when I heard someone charging in. I was able to see with my one good eye my former Director, jasNmushu, come barrelling in with pistols in each hand shooting at the men. I saw most of them drop and then the last one start to go into his coat for his gun."

"I tried to kick him but my legs were tied to the chair. It didn't matter, Lady jasNmushu finished him before I even finished my thought. She came over and untied me. She was helping me out of the warehouse when some more men came in from the back and started shooting. She had just shoved me out the door when I felt her drop."

"For some reason, the police had just arrived and started shooting back. In my delerium, I figured things were being handled so I dragged myself to the midtown precinct and the last thing I remember was seeing the cold hard floor coming at me."

Angel smiled at Mr. Grant's comment calling her a lady, she never thought of herself as a lady, but as a detective. She was busy jotting these notes down. She was amazed. She was going to ask another question, but Mr. Grant had already answered it.

So, she decided to end this conversation for now; she said,"Mr. Grant, thank you for your time to answer my questions. If I have any further questions, may I contact you later on?"

Mr. Grant said, "Yes, you may, Miss Angel."

With that, they said "Good bye" to each other and Angel hung up the phone.

She reviewed what she had, and it was a good start. Now she needs to take a short break before making her next call.

During the trip back to London, Andrea could not stop replaying the last moments with Barry in her mind. She paced the deck back and forth, trying to figure out if she had done the right thing.

She had been absolutely furious with Barry and the thought of that woman still plaging Barry had sent her to a murderous rage. She had tried, really tried, to explain that Barry, but he would not hear any of it. He did not like possesiveness and jealousy and that was that. Never mind that he had been quite the possesive type back when he was in Shanghai.

Andrea sighed. She apoligized to Barry for her actions and he seemed to accept the apology. A sly smiled crossed her lips when she remembered how that had made up. But she was still a bit upset. She had left him sleeping, checked out of the Plaza, and boarded the first ship back to London. She suppossed she owed him an explanation for her sudded departure however, so she decided to write him a note to be sent the moment she arrived.

Andrea wrote:

"Dear Barry:
I am sorry, darling, that I cannot stay in New York any longer. I must head back to London and attend to agency business.
I feel like I should apologize again for my reaction to Becky, but maybe I have done that enough. I have never been the type to compete for anyone's affections, and I am not sure I want to start now. Especially with Becky, who seems deteremined to weave herself back into your life.
I hope you recover soon, darling. You know where to find me.
Fondly,

AndreaX"

Barry read the note that was delivered by special messenger from AndreaX. He then started to think about the last time she was there and the argument they almost had because of Becky.

Barry remembered Andrea's tear soaked face complaining to him about how Becky never seems to leave him alone and how Barry explaining that he couldn't do anything about it. He then remembered Andrea bringing up Shanghai and how he was relentless in his pursuit of her. He didn't remember it quite like that.

He did remember it almost destroyed his friendship with Director Anstett. RAn told Barry he wasn't interested and then all of a sudden he seemed interested. When that was cleared up, Barry was free to get to know Andrea better. As Barry was thinking about that, his goofy grin reappeared as he recalled those times with her.

Then Barry remembered the letter in his hand. He always knew how dedicated she was to her job and to her agency and always made it clear he would never ask her to give it up for him. He started to wonder if there was any future for them because of that. He supposed he could move to London but Barry Grant Associates was being established in Shanghai and he really wanted to give it a chance.

Barry put the letter on the table beside his bed and sat back to contemplate his options. He closed his eyes and began to picture Andrea in his mind. How beautiful she was and how good she was at her job. He was proud of the work she did at her agency and how she's leading them. He was smiling when he fell asleep.

Across town, Becky was thinking about her own plans.

He walked into the hotel wondering if he would be welcomed if he showed up to visit his cousin. He entered the restaurant located in the hotel and took a seat at a private booth to wait for a woman he hadn't seen in a very long time. He hoped to find out what he would have to do to see Barry.

A beautiful blonde walked into the hotel for the second time. She went directly to the restaurant and scanned the crowd for the man she was meeting. She soon spotted Garry Grant and Garry spotted her. Garry motioned for her to join him so she went in and sat down opposite him.

"Hello, Garry. Long time, no see, huh? What have you been up to?"

Angel sits in the chair next to the phone, pen and paper at hand, she picks up the phone and dials R Anstett's room number.
