One thing to point out here is that the "other customers in the bar" are other players, not characters that are part of the mystery you are working.
There is often an experienced player or two there that is willing to give helpful advice and hints on how to solve the mysteries.
Stop on by for a drink, if no one is there when you show up just hang for a little while and others will stop by.
