Sellouts!

Hi All!

As I was driving home today, I was thinking about bands who I used to love who totally prostituted themselves to sell records to the masses.

A case in point: Red Hot Chili Peppers. They used to be awesome, and even if I didn't love all their songs, at LEAST I could respect them.

Their songs now are just pretty much commercial crap used to tempt teenagers into begging their parents to buy their completely PG cd's.

Who are some of the biggest sellout bands???

I'd have to say Dashboard Confessional. Ever since MTV got their claws into emo, the music has just gotten more and more commercial and less and less angst-ridden.

yeah but the thing is, even 'angst-ridden' is itself a very commercially-viable sellout vibe these days, simply because of how many bands have access to their mom's eye-makeup.

That said I'm gonna go with whoever's handling Bob Marley's legacy. He was originally all about using the power of music to provoke social change; now he's the theme music for wet T-shirt contests at hump one get one free wing night at Hooters and 'vacation in Jamaica' commercials.

Good one Crunch.

I'm also gonna vote Metallica into the sellout hall of fame. i absolutely LOVE them, have followed them since I was in my early teenage years, and since the black album, they have been on a downward slide at a ridiculous pace.

Gotta back you on the Metallica call, Biggie. And, yes, the whole 'angst' genre sell-out, Crunch, which covers the bands I would name.

And since we're talking genres, I'm quite disappointed in the whole 'pop-country' thing, though I continue to be impressed with the artists who remember that country music is supposed to be DIFFERENT. Unfortunately, there aren't many of them.

I have to say that one of my *favorite* bands of all time, REM, would have to be thrown on the sellout train as well...even though I hate to admit it. :) Starting way back with their "Green" album, I think. :(
