I would like to suggest you take a look at the
Newbie FAQ (in gray letters at the bottom of the page),
The Help page (located upper right corner of the page)
and the Welcome Newbies thread (located as a sticky in the Newbies board)
Almost every question can be answered in one of these three resources.
To answer your question, this is from the Newbie FAQ:
"You get a contact by doing favors for the townspeople. Most of the time you'll get a piece of equipment, but sometimes the townsperson will become your contact."
