how do you join sides with a political group like the people at the church and stuff?

You may want to read the Newbie FAQ. The people at the church are part of a faction and you get in their good graces by doing small jobs as requested and by choosing to pursue or turn down cases accordingly. I found that reading the newbie message board was very helpful as well.
