As a very new player can any detective advise me on how many experience points you should have before advancing to Intermediate? I'm a bit reluctant because I accidently got into 'intermediate' at the beginning by offering to do someone a favour and found it baffling.

But...you cant choose the level of favors. It will go up automaticly. There is a gap somewhere when your favor level is getting higher than what you can easily solve. So dont worry and quit if you get stuck. After earning more skills and equipment it will get easier.
The highest level of favors available is inc. hard.

It doesn't really matter when you move on to intermediate. Whenever you feel like easy mysterys are too simple and that you can solve them quickly that is a good time to move on. You may find (as I did) that when moving on to a new level it seems harder than you wanted, in which case you can go back to easy and gain a little more experience with the game.
