Just a short post in which I would like to bring to discussion the recent spate of swapping items between agencies. I believe this is certainly unethical and takes away much of the challenge of the game. For obvious reasons I cannot be too specific, but it does not reward hard work and organisation, just laziness. It also abuses what the locker function is all about.

Obviously you cannot ban people from trading things between agency lockers and calling it unethical is not going to stop people doing it.

I would like to hear the Sleuth community's thoughts on the issue, I may be in the minority but from my initial feedback I feel like this has caused some distatste amongst some members.

Should the majority find this practice unethical I propose a 72hr cooloff period for locker access in agencies after having been promoted to agent or higher. This would also to a certain extent prevent immediate hit and run thefts that have happened from time to time.

It seems to me that all items in the new missions are available from IH favors. I haven't seen any information to the contrary on this at all. In fact I just sold a leopard banded fedora, Jojo, so I know that is available from an IH favor.

I like to think of the game in "real life" terms. So if I were *really* a member of a detective agency, who was willing to buy or sell a particular item, why wouldn't I? Personally I prefer the thrill of the hunt, so won't be looking to buy any of the items for the missions. And if a detective I was friendly with came to me and asked if I had a pair of polka dotted pumps (which I *don't*, so back off people), I would not have a problem with inviting them into SMRT to pick them up. I wouldn't charge, either--what do I want with more money? So in "real life" terms, I don't object to swapping/selling items, because I feel that "real life" detectives would do the same. I like the idea of the market, I must say! :)

Thank you all for being so receptive, even if I did use "guilds" instead of "agencies." (You can sure tell where my experiences have been. ;) ) Still and all, I do really love this game, and I think an open trading board would be great.

It's the underhanded things that tend to erode community feeling, rather than promote it, at least in my gaming background.

I am all for an organized way of trade.

I casually commented on the like on a previous thread as well. I don't see how it is unethical, since we are each playing this game on our own, not competing for one and the same prize. The way we play our games may be as lone wolves, or as active agency members - however we choose. The game itself though, is still our game alone, to be played as we like. A swap between two people has no effect on the community or anyone else's game. So I say, no harm, no foul.

Some people have little patience. I am one of those people. I don't even bother reading the twists or intros anymore (sorry to all the writers!!!) In contrast, some people prefer to explore each option, and complete each avenue in its entirety. That is each of our choices though, and those choices, again, don't affect anyone else's game. So what would make them the wrong choices?

Anyway, just to restate - YAY TRADING!

I have to say, i´m a bit puzzled. on the other hand this trading thing could be nice, but sleuth is so unique, I don´t want an actual market place, like 99% of RPG´s.
. If agencies want to help out each other, that´s ok, i´m not against swapping. So if one wants to trade with another, they would have to put a little effort on that. But to have all the stuff I´ve worked hard to get being there just to buy, no, i dont like that.
What i´ve learned, every one who can get to Shangri La, can get items needed sooner or later (I for one seem to belong the "later "group).
So bottom line: No market place.

I dont see a big deal in agencies helping each other out by swapping items....but I agree with tollo. I dont think items, that we've worked hard to get, should be put out there to buy. That's too easy. JMHO

Just to clarify myself, I don't necessarily want to see all the items up for sale in the detective shop or anything like that. What was more on my mind was having a separate thread where you could post what you were looking for, instead of creating new threads in the existing boards and cluttering it up with trades.

Then if you were interested in the trading route you could go there, and if you don't want to participate you don't have to look at all the posts.

Truthfully, it doesn't really matter to me either way. I am for trading, but I haven't done so myself. I'm still here slaving away through cases to find that elusive item! I don't mind the wait, because I simply cannot decide between the Tigers and Steepers! Who to choose, who to choose!

All of the items in question are available through Incredibly Hard favors. Any detective who is able to access the new areas should presumeably be getting IH favors, so it should never be impossible to reach those areas without item swapping. A few of those items are also available from other sources (non-favor).

That said, I do not have a problem with item swapping for this purpose. Generally, we have opted not to have a very open marketplace for items, because the game is built around a pretty simple item economy. However, any methods by which players can obtain the items necessary for these new challenges should be considered fair.
