Thanks to Admin for posting resumes. It is a better idea than listing all detective names (for those that wanted privacy).

Bad News:
There seems to be a bug with the resumes. I know of at least 2 detectives, that show them listed in agencies they never joined.
I believe it is tied to "gift subscriptions". When a person buys someone a gift subscription, it automatically links the accounts. So, now the gifter and giftee have the same resume.

I am sure Sleuth Admin is working on correcting this, but I wanted to let everyone know, before we go around accusing people of "infiltrating our agencies" :D

For you non-subscribers, you can ignore this conversation. Detective Resumes are a feature that only apply to subscribers, and can only be accessed by subscribers.

This turns out to be a really complicated feature. Complicated in a technical sense, complicated from an ethical sense, and complicated due to the vagaries of human motivation. Too complicated, probably, to throw up to public discussion. But here we are.

There was indeed a bug that was causing resumes to inappropriately link accounts where one person bought a gift subscription for another. However, this was not the source of most of the complaints I got on releasing this.

Most people who have complained simply want their history blocked even though it is valid, for a variety of reasons.

In some cases, they purchased a subscription for a friend by logging into their friend's account and then using the same paypal account they had used for their own subscription, etc.

In other cases, they don't give a reason, just that they want it blocked.

What I have instead decided to do is to seriously dumb down the resume logic. It no longer searches for other accounts purchased with the same paypal account. It now only searches for other detectives on the same subscription.

For example, if I have a detective that gets retired, and I transfer the subscription to a new detective, all of my previous detective's agencies will show on my new detective's resume.

However, if I purchase two separate subscriptions, one for one detective, and one for another detective, the two resumes will now not be cross linked.

The advantage of this change, is it should completely eliminate agency history records that were bought by one person for another person, whether the purchase was made through a gift subscription, or whether they just used the same paypal account to buy subscriptions for each account separately.

The disadvantage is, it will be easier to cover up your tracks if you want to start over with a new identity. Doing so would simply require starting a totally separate detective, and then purchasing a separate subscription for that account, even if you were to use the same paypal account to do so.

So, it’s not a perfect solution, but it is going to have to do.

Ben, I'm sorry.. Iam really confused... and don't get this... sorry for being so dumb.

Ok, why do we have this history? It was my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong here!) that it was to STOP detectives that had already stolen from agencies, strating a new detective and NOT being able to cover their tracks?

Whereas this way it seems like those people still can?
However, this will stop someone with a detective that has stolen something from going into another agency if they don't change their identity?

Maybe if the detective was able to explain why they left the agency, and allow a director from the agency explain too. This is a feature used on credit reports to explain why people have poor credit ratings etc. Maybe this would make the system work, by allowing the detective and their former agency exxplain why that person left.

A good Director should ask that anyhow and contact the Director's of the previous agency too, to make sure there is no bad blood.

What I am asking, is can an person create a detective, then steal from an agency, create an agency, create a new detective/identity, join another agency, steal again without anyone being none the wiser?

From what I understand from Ben's post, as long as they are on different subscriptions, then yes.

Before this, directors had no idea which agency a person had been to last. Your method does seem a bit involved to be honest. Firstly, to join an agency for each detective would involve paying a subscription each time, which could get pricey. If they transfer their subscription, the details of their old agencies follow them. So, unless someone wanted to spend $7.00 a time just to steal, its unlikely.

I agree with Greyling. There are too many inconsistencies or ways around this for this feature to be useful. It just clutters up the detective page IMHO.
