Is it possible that research doesn't give you a helpful clue

That's a bit broad, but I'll give it a whack:

If you are just doing a normal case and you have the Research Skill then the Research Skill WILL eliminate one suspect who has a fake (or no) alibi every time. BUT that suspect *has to be on your list*. So if you have Research skill, and it says you never found anything, then you haven't a full list yet.

In Feature Mysteries (FM's) eg Doomsayers Trilogy, the Research Skill is not used in the same strict sense. For instance you don't have to have the skill to use it in FM's. Nor do you always find something with it. That's based on the order or sequence of the Feature Mystery.
