I've narrowed my next skill choice down to foot print analysis, handwriting analysis, research or advanced hair analysis. Which do you all think I should take. Also, how useful is research? I've never really been too sure what it does exactly

Looks like there's a consensus - my vote's research :)

it will automatically be available to you for every case you do. but in order to use the option, you have to go to a place where you can do research - the Hall of Records. this is located in City Hall. so go there, then find the hall of records and you will have the option to "research your current case"

While all of the skills you've chosen are very useful, and help to eliminate suspects, Research is the only one GUARANTEED to eliminate a suspect from your list for every case. It doesn't matter what evidence you have, or what alibi the suspect has, research will rule that person out as having a false alibi, and that he/she WILL NOT MATCH any of your evidence. It's why most of the people here find it to be so helpful.
