Macnaghten, sounds like you are probably missing the basic thread and hair skills. They will allow you find those clues at the scene. ;) Smart gear will help, once you have those two skills, as well.

Josepha, the crime scene description for the random cases are just for effect.

The actual wording has no bearing on the case you are working.

You need to worry about motive and alibi from each suspect.

the formula (in case you did not see it in other places)

Liar/no alibi + PE = guilty
Liar/no alibi + WE = guilty
WE + WE = guilty

PE = physical evidence
WE = witness evidence

Those are the things you need to pay attention to for the random mysteries. The Featured Mysteries require more attention to the text.

R. Anstett, I beg to differ with you. Not that I don't use the equation because I do and it's kept me in good stead. However, a careful reading of the text is also useful to me in that it points me in the right direction when I have little to go on. Never underestimate instinct, young man.

Josepha, the text you are talking about is completely random. Whatever you think you are seeing is sheer coincidence, and I would recommend using the equations instead. Perhaps since you are only one day old, you haven't played enough cases to realize this. But take it from someone who's been around a while. That text doesn't affect or point to the killer. Instinct doesnt cut it lol You have to have a fake/none alibi plus PE or 2 WE to equal a guilty one. Instinct, even if it does work for u (coincidence, as was said) will lead u to retirement, and you can bank on that ;)

Resse, as I had stated to R. Anstett, I do you use the equations first and foremost, however I do not use it exclusively. And it hasn't led to my retirement yet!

What I use is the last two lines of the crime scene...the thoughts of the detective, as it were.

Well, considering your two detectives are 1 and 0 days old, I say give it time. It will happen. The thoughts of the detective are always the same, given the same scenario. Trust me, Im over 600 days old. I think if I were in your position, and so many experienced players were telling me something, I would listen to them...But play it your way; you can always start a new detective, it just won't have the experience, skills, money, or equipment as your retired detective.
