physical evidence and smarts

There is something I don't quite understand:
As far as I know, we say that there will always be at least 2 pieces of evidence pointing to the guilty suspect. This means that there will always be 1 physical evidence pointing to the murderer (I never came across 0 or 2). In that case, the less physical evidence the easier to solve the case (you have less things to check).
And also, I assume that the more smarts you have, the bigger the chance to spot more physical evidence. Since you never have multiple physical evidence point to the quilty suspect, why would you want to have more smarts?

Actually, I did have a couple of cases in the beginning without any physical evidence, but that was before getting hair and thread analysis.

However, I still feel most comfortable if I can get two eye witnesses to cooperate. In my experience there are usually two pointing at the killer (not that it's always possible to get them of course), but only one at an innocent person.

I still quite regularly get cases without any physical evidence, and I'm doing very very hard with closer to 20 000 exp. It's quite common if you have no (or very few) smarts skills. Also, very often when I find one piece of physical it does not point to the guilty suspect.

I have enough smarts skills that I always find all of the physical evidence (3 except incredibly hard, where it is 4). Always one and only one points to the right suspect. Always the others owning the evidence will have alibis. In a case I picked up in our case files there were only two pieces of evidence. Both owners had alibis. There was no DETECTED physical evidence pointing to the right suspect. That's not to say it didn't exist. If the original investigator had been a little smarter, they would have found the one more necessary bit.

It would be handy if, as you work for the same agency, you could re-investigate the scene and find evidence missed by your colleague.

It's an idea, but probably in the wrong place to post.
