Dearest Skye
Reading the Welcome Newbie's Thread is going to give you everything you need and more.

Here's what the Newbie FAQ has to say:

1 point: You may now visit the faction's headquarters, buy equipment, and do little jobs for them.
5 points: You receive a slight discount when purchasing faction equipment.
10 points: If you are in an agency, you can now purchase information on treasure hunts. You also receive and additional discount on faction equipment.
20 points: You receive an additional discount on faction equipment.
25 points: If you have enough skill points, you can now learn the faction's special skill.
30 points: You will now receive the highest discount on items.

How do I switch factions?
Switching factions is hard if you're not in an agency or able to travel, but it's not impossible. Negative standings with a faction will drop to ?3 by themselves if you hold off doing little jobs for an opposing faction. Then in order to get from ?3 to +1, you need to pay attention to any cases that will positively influence the faction you want to get in with and quit any that will have a negative effect.

Hope this helps. Like I said, cfm's post right at the top of these boards has SOOO much helpful info and the updated FAQ's is a great tool too.
Good luck!

That ? isa supposed to be a - as in -3.

Ben, I copied and pasted this straight from the Newbie FAQ... is it my computer or some kind of glitch?
I've noticed puncuation typos occuring before where somehow a ramdom character has been inserted instead of what is supposed to be there.

And this one taken straight from the mouth of the beloved and amazing cfm herself, second post down on the Welcome Newbie's Post:

FACTIONS?what are they and which should I pick? Basically, most of us see them as mob organization types. Early on, factions don?t really matter much. They sell some gear, but most of it you can get from favors for free instead of paying their high prices. They have skills, but all of them are more for convienence than for necessity. You are better off building your interview and smart skills before worrying about the faction skills. Here is some information on faction standing though that is helpful in dealing with them.
Faction points ? result
1 point ? you may now visit this faction?s headquarters.
10 points ? if you are in an agency you may purchase any hunt information.
25 points ? if you have enough skill points you may now purchase the faction skill
30 points ? You will now receive the highest discount on items.

The Faction leader for any faction receives a special perk they can use once a day. This perk is one of the few secrets still rather guarded, so I?m not going to post here, and hopefully no one else will either.
