the sticky post "Why you should Subscribe" at beginning of the Newbie Questions board has some related info to this post, too. And check this thread out: http://noir.playsleuth.com/map/cityhall/post.spy?id=14031

this seems to be a long running question for many new people; no one should feel stupid for being curious as to why things are the way they are if they never knew in the first place. but that's why we have sticky posts and newbie faq's etc. for your reading enjoyment : )

some thoughts:
yes, some online games are free, but some are subscriber only. Sleuth is nice enough to be both. even if you don't have money, you can still maintain a level of involvement as opposed to not being able to play at all.

also, bear in mind that Sleuth is run by Hypothetical Software, an independant start-up company, as opposed to bigger companies and corporations that can support a large amount of servers, bandwidth, and administrative and technical support to pass on to players for free, which is usually coupled with more aggressive advertising and marketing techniques.

so, until computers, bandwidth, time and general existence as a human being become free, and since it is a Business, Sleuth will probably rely on subscriptions to continue. and subscribers will have expanded benefits for their contribution: i.e. more cases and agency involvement, etc. because what is the point of subscribing if you don't get any benefits? sorry to lay it out like this, but it is just the way business goes.

in the meantime, i hope all the unsubscribed people are still having a fun and meaningful adventure with this game. and maybe someday they can subscribe and find even more fun and meaningful adventure. and as jojo says, there is always Tomorrow. Happy Sleuthing!
