As far as I know, there should be only three pieces of evidence at the crime scene in really hard cases. Two will belong to people with real alibies and one should belong to the killer.
If none of the pieces of evidence belong to the suspect in question, then I'm pretty sure it is safe to eliminate him/her from your list.
P.S. If you have both basic thread and hair analysis you will find all the evidence at the scene...You may not be able to determine specifics, but you will find it.
