What does it do? Is it really useful, or should I complete my Smarts Skills first?

Pickpocketing is not a good skill to pick until you have a full set of interview (charm or tough) and investigation (smart) skills.

Pickpocketing will only be useful when your client is the guilty party. As the cases get harder, the number of suspects goes up. Consequently the number of times your client will be guilty goes down. You are much better off with the full set of other skills such as research, etc. than pickpocketing IMO.

Why would research be so important?

Research is one of the most if not the most valuable skill in the game.

With Research you can eliminate one suspect off your list entirely. You visit city hall, check the records, and you know one of your suspects could not have done the crime.
