Can you ever win the same equipment from a favour that you can buy with a faction?
For example, I really want the leather eye patch, and I could buy it from the Green Hand for lots of $$$.
Would I ever receive a leather eye patch as a favour reward eventually?

Nope, some items can be retrieved by doing favors. The more expensive items like your beloved eye patch or commando beret can only be obtained if you purchase them from the factions.
I should know, 'cause I happen to have a leather eye patch myself and I kept waiting for that darn thing to come out!
