Yay! I have really been anticipating the World Cup... and now it's finally here!

Angola, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Tunisia, Asia, Iran, Japan, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Australia, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia & Montenegro, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, Costa Rica, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, USA...

I have no favorites... all of these teams are playing fairly well, and mostly all of the matches are fun to watch.

Wikipedia has an excellent article on the event with schedules and other nifty information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup

So, what do you all think? Which team is the best bet at winning the cup? Which flag do you have flying in the wind on your car? Which flag have you painted or drawn on yourself or on paper millions of times?

What do you have to say about FIFA 2006?

My guess is the winner will come out of the following foursome; Argentina, Brazil, Italy & Germany (because of home advantage but a long shot).

Spain (Fabregas!), Holland, Czech Republic and England are good outsiders. France is IMHO over the hill.

My best team so far:

Buffon (Italy)
Emerson (Brazil)
Nesta (Italy)
Cannavaro (Italy)
Lahm (Germany)
Lampard (England)
Frings (Germany)
Kaka (Brazil)
Pirlo (Italy)
Ronaldinho (Brazil)
Frei (Switzerland)

Player with the coolest name, Bastian Schweinsteiger!!! Jawohl!!!

June 14th, 2006
Spain beats Ukraine 4-0
Tunisia ties Saudi Arabia 2-2

As of now, Poland and Germany are still going at it with no score as of yet. I think Germany will win... Poland's last match with Ecuador was disastrous.

I can't wait to see England and Trinidad and Tobago square off tomorrow...

Ugh. I'm going to be commuting during the England game, and can't seem to find a public radio station carrying it. BOOOO! I'll pretty much have my fingers in my ears and be yelling "NA NA NA I can't hear you" until I get to see the taped replay.

Poor Poland. Dismissed 1-0 in added time.

Wow the Ukraine really aren't that bad of a team. And it was a train-wreck. I actually hope the Netherlands does well - Robben is a cracker. And if the Gods are kind Portugal will get somewhere just coz I'm a Figo fan.

Seeing as my mother's side of the family is Italian, I agree with Greyling -

GO ITALY!!!!!!!!

Besides, they'd kill me if I ever cheered for anybody else :)

mmmmuwahaha...

*feigns sympathy, then slips a big orange Robben jersey over Nikki's head once her guard is down*

*had to expand neckhole to accommodate big foam clog*

*wonders why nothing rhymes with 'orange'*

yup yup squirrel...poor Figo, always a bridesmaid, etc.

Moment du jour for me has to be that Ecuadorian dude whipping out the Spiderman mask as part of his goal celebration...god...he had been playing with it stuffed into his shorts...now that's passion, lol!

lol well Australia *surprise surprise* got beaten by Brazil. 2-zip. and they only scored after we sacrificed defense for more attack so... lol even with Harry Kewell carrying out a hotdog on a string and stick to try and distract Ronaldo.

I loved the ref in the USA Italian game... I thought at one stage both teams would join hands and break into a Willy Wonka-like "Yes, I've got a golden ticket" chorus. Well at least until he started flashing the red ones. I thought it was gonna just be the Goalies kickin it back and forth to each other at one stage.

Yup yup AZN, Korea did really well in collecting a point from France! Koreatown was pretty happy about it, lol, trust me to have been trying to drive through the area on a grocery run EXACTLY nine minutes after people came out of the pubs!

Courage, young squirrel...even without the meat-on-a-stick tactics, Aus did really well against the juggernaut. Viduka was inches from levelling!

Hrm. I kinda think a 'goalie showdown' option would be a cool alternative to penalty kicks!
