Yay! I have really been anticipating the World Cup... and now it's finally here!

Angola, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Tunisia, Asia, Iran, Japan, Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Australia, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia & Montenegro, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, Costa Rica, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, USA...

I have no favorites... all of these teams are playing fairly well, and mostly all of the matches are fun to watch.

Wikipedia has an excellent article on the event with schedules and other nifty information:

So, what do you all think? Which team is the best bet at winning the cup? Which flag do you have flying in the wind on your car? Which flag have you painted or drawn on yourself or on paper millions of times?

What do you have to say about FIFA 2006?

Yay! I was totally gonna do a world cup post, but since I started one for Champion's League...you know...didn't wanna pigeon-hole myself and stuff...8-P

Okay so I live PRECISELY at the spot where Little Italy and Little Portugal meet in Toronto. The Portugese tend to support Brazil in any contest not involving Portugal. The Italians tend to support Argentina in any contest not involving Italy. All four of these sides have won their openers.

For a re-enactment of what my 'hood sounds like these days:

1.) get 19 of your closest friends really really drunk

2.) stuff as many of them into your car as you can manage and squeeze in with them.

3.) start the engine (legal disclaimer: don't actually drive...Sleuth doesn't need a lawsuit!). Rev that engine like it owes you money.

4.) Have your stupidest friend start screaming his/her opinions about whatever comes to mind, and have the others alternate between bad renditions of national anthems and random wookie noises.

5.) Apply forehead to horn. Do not remove.

6.) amplify times 1000.

I say that like I'm not loving it.

I'm into underdogs, so I loved watching Trinidad and Tobago collect their first ever point in the finals from Sweden, with a last minute sub in goal and down a player for the second half.

Little bit surprised at some not-so-hot results from big teams. Like England, 1-0 on an own-goal against Paraguay; Holland, Portugal and Brazil managing only 1-0 against teams they should have been able to do a little better against, and France drawing at nil against Switzerland.

My vote for best goal so far: Andrea Pirlo for Italy v. Ghana

Smart money's on Brazil, but nothing about me is smart :P, I'm just digging watching the games too. I have to wait until later in the tournament to get really empassioned over any one team.

Screw February 29th...this is the best thing that only comes around every four years!

Been rooting for Italy since 1990 so not reaaally about to change sides even though they're no longer as glamorous as back then. On the other hand I'd also love to see someone like f.ex. Korea win. Well, overall I'm not really that big on football, though, and as long as Argentina doesn't win (they always play mean and dirty) it's fine with me ;D

Last night Croatia lost to Brazil. What do you think, should I wear mourning today?

Hehehe - depends how big a football fan you are. But on the upside it wsa after all Brazil and you're facing Japan and Australia (or do I have the groups mixed up completely?) next so chances of moving on to the next round are still alive and well :)

I'm not one at all (I'm afraid it's a dark spot on my patriotism). You haven't mixed the groups, as I learned from my husband who is not a big fan either, but likes to be informed on everything. He has a great respect for Brazil although he says they are not as good as they used to be. In a few days we'll play against Australia. If we win, do you think Secret Squirrel will speak to me again?

Methinks it wouldn't really be fair to hold you personally responsible for another country's potential inability to score goals ;)

To quote Bugs Bunny "She don't know me very well, do she..." ;)

I'm hoping Ronaldo has a few more burgers before Monday night, coz he was moving about as well as a day one contestant on the Biggesl Loser!

Anyway, they say that one fourth of Australian team are of Croatian origin, so it wouldn't matter so much.

My guess is the winner will come out of the following foursome; Argentina, Brazil, Italy & Germany (because of home advantage but a long shot).

Spain (Fabregas!), Holland, Czech Republic and England are good outsiders. France is IMHO over the hill.

My best team so far:

Buffon (Italy)
Emerson (Brazil)
Nesta (Italy)
Cannavaro (Italy)
Lahm (Germany)
Lampard (England)
Frings (Germany)
Kaka (Brazil)
Pirlo (Italy)
Ronaldinho (Brazil)
Frei (Switzerland)

Player with the coolest name, Bastian Schweinsteiger!!! Jawohl!!!
