Post your opinion her about the ongoing war in Iraq. And remember folks, everybody is entitled to an opinion so don't flame eachother for having opposite thoughts.

Constructive debating can be a nice way to overcome differences and not just widen the gap.

I dread the day my husband goes to fight over there. I'm proud of what he does, but I don't believe in this damn war.

*enters with soapbox banging at her heels. Glares at it then sighs and steps up onto it*

Alright. My opinion: I disagree vehemently with the policies and actions of our government in this matter. I believe it was grossly mishandled and is a very bad mistake.

However... Our men and women who have fought and/or are fighting and those who are there who have not seen combat yet (and hopefully won't), are to be honored and respected. They are doing their jobs and they are backing up their beliefs with their lives. How many of us can say that? And how many of us would?

In a perfect world, none of us would have to back up our beliefs with our lives. This isn't a perfect world and we are not perfect people. This is a great sadness. I only hope that we all learn before it's too late to love and respect each other as much for our differences as for our similarities.

*steps down off of soapbox and leaves with said soapbox dancing behind her*

http://www.antiwar.com/casualties/ and http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

as of June 4, 2006:

minimum total American deaths - 2475
minimum total civilian deaths - 38254

My opinion is that this is a really, really bad idea. Troops aren't the problem, nor is the citizenry. Rather what you're dealing with in the states -and I am so angry that this is something that people like Iris are being forced to worry about- is an administration that tells the public things are under control and improving when clearly they are getting progressively worse, and refuses to acknowledge growing public opinion that perhaps the best way to "support troops" is to let them stay at home with their families and not put them at risk.

I wasn't saying that creating a thread on Iraq was an "excellent" idea. I have never been fond of discussing wars, particularly ones that seem to be get as loaded of a discussion as this one.

I think the US has different things to worry about then the war in Iraq, with 30-35 million full time *working* Americans living below the poverty line. A federal minimum wage of 5,15 dollars, that hasn't been raised in the past 10 years.

The streets of America aren't safe. For some reason it is normal or "that's just the way it is" over there that children can not play outside in their street unsupervised. That in many schools of the US teenagers need to pass through metal detector gates in order to get to class. To be educated in a school system that in the past 10 years reached an ultimate low in quality.

The world needs far more important countries to be focused on. Ones that were a more immediate threat then Iraq was with their phantom bombs.

The US government should have listened to experts and advisors better. None of them thought it was going to be a right and short war. That after all this time the situation is still what it is over there, is not surprising.

I personally think the American people have been consistantly lied to by their government as to why the war in Iraq started, how long it was going to take, if it was really needed, if it was the most dangerous hot bed in the world at that point.

The same goes for other 26 countries that also deployed troups in the war in support of the US, among which very poor countries like Albania, Mongolia, and Romania. And other countries in which the situation rather became more dangerous and explosive due to participation like The Netherlands, UK, and Denmark.

I feel cheated by my own government as well.

And if it was my loved one sent to Iraq, I'd be pretty darn pissed. This person signed up to fight and risk their lives for good causes, to make sure I am safe. Iraq is not what they signed up for.

A visit to Iris house, definitely opened up this Dutchies eyes. :) What I find most shocking that the US government doesn't even treat those men and their families like absolute gold. I am sure my government doesn't treat our guys any better.

*pout* I always liked the fact that Sleuth never had this beaten dead horse of a discussion going on. And I thought we were going to be sail on without ever having it. :(

Thanks for your input, jstkdn. And don't get me wrong, I'd never say that wars are an excellent thing.

However, we can't deny that real life is also influenced by more gruesome facts and that those gruesome facts are usually the ones the media is focusing upon. People who rather not hear about them can simply ignore this thread. I just figured that exchanging ideas about ongoing events of international magnitude has a suitable forum over here as the Sleuth community is very international as well. I do believe that people like to express their opinions on such matters that are topics in every day's life anyway. So why should Sleuth be any different?

I think that the war in Iraq is an extremly bad idea.

What good is this war doing? Bush said that he knew that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq but we haven't even found any! I feel that all of these good hardworking people that go into Iraq shouldn't have to keep on scaraficing their lives for absoulutly no purpose!

Yes, we want to help the people in Iraq but this isn't the best way to help them. We are doing more bad in Iraq than good.

Sorry guys but I just feel really strongly about this war. I just hate the way that the soliders are being killed and they have families that are hurting. I know that some of my teachers are suffering because their family is in the army.

Can someone please just read what I wrote?
