Well each is something for more advanced detectives so will go in the order I think you should get them in.

Lock Picking:
When you encounter a locked door while interviewing suspects you can pick the lock and get one question (motive or alibi) answered by exploring their house. Very useful and is the first faction skill I would recomend any newbie get.

Stress Detection:
Automatically gives you an extra blurb saying that the person you are talking too will need persusation to answer more questions, or will only answer one more question, etc. Is useful for newer detectives or to help judge when a suspect is going to clam up. In some people's opinion is not a worth while skill becuase you can easily learn the pattern of when a suspect or townie will clam up after doing a few cases at a particular level.

Hypnotism:
Automatically attempted every time you talk to a suspect about motive. Sometimes works sometimes does not. Can give you an extra suspect or two every case or so. Works better with smart gear.

Surveillance:
You can use this on a clammed suspect to try and find some dirt on them. Will unclam then so you can ask more questions. Does not work all the time, based on the gear you are wearing. In my opinion is not for detectives who do not already have most of the other faction skills.

Hope that helps people make an informed decision.

Unless you're Detective automatically has Stress Detection, it's may be a skill that you REALLY rregret later. It's a lot of points to use on a skill early on when other skills will actually UNCLAM people. Which, as Ben once stated was the most useful thing.

As Ran states, you'll soon learn how many questions you can ask.
As he also states, they're more the advanced detective, (by which stage, Stress Detection is pretty redundant) therefore as a young detective you go for your set of Crime Scene (Smarts) and Interview Skills (Tough or Charming).-Reading the cfm's Welcome Newbie's post will give you more information.

(AND also, hynotism should work better with Charming gear as far as I know... :)

*takes this new newbie question and answers and tacks it on to cfm's Welcome Newbies post*
