Hi Lavendar,
I think I'd go for Hair Analysis - mainly because hairs at the crime scene won't be visible to you unless you have it.
Another useful skill is Research which allows you to eliminate 1 of the suspects with a false/none-of-your-business alibis. It's an expensive skill, but well worth the skill points it costs.
And then basically get your tough interviewing skills up to Advanced both for Interrogation and Intimidation to help make the suspects and townies more cooperative :)

I know everyone's gonna kill me for this, but similar to what Greyling implied by the order of what she mentioned, Hair Analysis is more important than Research during the easy cases.

I second or maybe thats a third the motion of hair analysis. either way you will need it more now in the easy cases than research.

Go to the "Hall of Records" at City Hall (it's on the left side of City Hall) and choose "Research Case". In every case 1 suspect with a false/none of your business alibi will be cleared by Research and turn up on the city records once the person is present on your list of suspects. And you can then eliminate the person, cleared by Research, from your list of possible suspects :)
