I love politics but i also love to hear other people's opinions on these important matters although i may disagree. i know it is a very controversial subject and not exactly a dinner table conversation but i feel that people need to express themselves on such matters as long as we can play nicely and not be too harsh. if i am allowed to, i shall suggest the first topic:
The Immigration Act

Not all over the news here--America's news isn't everyone's news, remember! ;)

On a side note, can i say i've never had any problems with the local Immigration / Emmigration Act. I've been in and out of Delhi, Shanghai, London, New York, and no-ones even asked me to identify myself or asked for a passport once. Besides, you'd think they'd ask questions about the bloodhound? Ok so in New York once I had to sing America the Beautiful, but that's only because the 1930 World Cup Soccer Team was on the same ship. And, it's OK John Hale the Brown Coats will save us all. [that's my sci-fi geek coming out]

sci-fi geek struggling to peek out after being buried so long under sleuthaholicism. "Brown Coats... Brown Coats... I know that reference..." Wracks brain to no avail. slips down again under fresh onslaught of sleuthaholicism.

DUDE, lol *PM's a bigass care package full of Stephen Harper masks, Timbits and softwood lumber to arabesque from Toronto*

OK, so I gather that in the US there are a number of congressional proposals out which will be punitive towards illegal immigrants. Presumably this has at least one group up in arms because, well d'uh, life is hard enough if you are a member of an impoverished group and since most of these so-called illegals are people of colour, throw racism into the mix too. Sickeningly, there's probably another bunch of folks who are whining about it because stemming the flow of illegals would also mean a hit to the cheap, unregulated labor upon which they rely.

(er, how'm I doing so far?)

Arabesque, you took the words outta my mouth. I'd even go as far as to say that the economy in question owes much of its clout to unwaged, let alone low waged, labour *coughslaverycough*

I think these Brown Shirts are like groups of self-appointed citizen militia who patrol the borders picking up people they think might be entering illegally, right? They 'say' they dont use violence...frickin' scary.

I'm from Belgium, can someone briefly enlighten me on this Immigration act?

Unless this is a debate meant for American citizens only :)

IMHO - I think the US needs to be more concerned about the jobs leaving the country. That is what is really hurting our economy.

Immigrants doing jobs no one wants cheaply, helps everybody. I do not want to pay $5 for a head of lettuce; Also, if they want to pay into our social security system and tax system, who am I to complain.
