I just started this game yesterday and did a couple of beginner cases. You get experience points and skill points for solved cases, is that right? At the end of a case it'll say ... you got 1 skill point and 10 (0r so) experience points. Now, are those two separate or is it basically telling me that I got 10 exp and that equalled 1 skill point?

Also - I attempted a favor case for the fortune teller and (becasuse I think it was harder than my skills/stats allowed), I pissed off the availible sources of information before I could get all the suspects named/motived. I abandoned the case because it looked like a dead end - is there some way around that problem or what?

For the second part, it depends on how many suspects you're originally given, what questions you ask, etc. For example, if you only start out with one suspect, try asking if that one has any who might have a motive to commit the crime before asking for an alibi.

Thanks. I'll keep in mind expanding my suspect list before checking for alibis.

Favors start at Intermediate level, so they are very hard for beginners at first. Get good interrogation skills (either tough or charming - NOT both). That will make it much easier to interview suspects and witnesses, so it gets easier. A little gear to augment that can be a good investment for a beginning sleuth.

Your skill points come fast in the beginning so spend them very wisely. They will slow down too soon. there is probably a thread in mod pics on what order to get skills in. My advice for starters is - get your basic evidence skills first. (you are born with basic handwriting and footprint, but need to askfor/buy basic thread and hair. Then pick either tough or charming, and get either interrogation/intimidation or sweettalking/rulebending - through intermediate & even advanced. Then for for research and lockpicking. Other folks might use other combos, but the above worked well for me. Good luck.

Actually exp and skill points are somewhat dependent on eachother.

The more exp you have the more exp it takes to gain a new skill point. Many of us old folks around here have to gain 50K exp before gaining a single skill point anymore. So spend them wisely!!

One minor point not brought up here.

XP controls what level of case you can open up.

You will not be able to open the beginniner cases after a certain point. And as you go up you will have tougher and tougher cases available to you, until you hit the 100,000 mark and can open up Almost Impossible cases.
