Someone bumped up the sleuthmap thread. I posted underneath to explain, but then realized the thread started with the URL. So I removed the thread, and replacing it with this post....without a URL.

Heheheeheh, for a second I thought, someone noticed that the link to this community site had been removed.

Worse, someone actually went to the site.

With each entry, an extra picture was added. The map became popular, and started misbehaving in terms of taking forever to load each individual pic.

I don't want to do any maintenance on it now. As it is with my *cough cough* host in the US. My plan was moving sleuthchat and guestmap to a host I use for business in the Netherlands. Sleuthchat I have moved over. Guestmap, I will move over later, and sort out the issues that I have. As I currently have my hands full with cleaning up and one by one working on a list of to-do's the size of my arm for sleuthchat, this one is low priority for me.

I can sumn it up though, it seems that 80% of everyone on the sleuth map is on the east coast of the US.

Wouldn't really call it "mine" (hehe) since it's just a standard map hosted by that site, but it's working okay - think there's only a small couple of features I'd like to be able to change, but as I said it's a standard map and there's only so much you can do with and to it.

However, I put it on hold when I heard Nikkie was working on one for the chat, because we don't really need two unless maybe the one for the chat won't be linked by itself so that those who don't use the chat could add themselves as well, then maybe yes we could have two? :)

I took a look again. I had implemented a demo on sleutchat, but the problem is you need to fill in your geographical code longtitude and latitude, instead of point and click. I think it is going to take a few months before open source comes available to bypass this problem. All other open source software for this requires me to give up one of my databases and use it just for that purpose. And I rather implement on the same database as sleutchat. Only registeration via sleutchat would be needed and nto another one. Plus, I only get 4 DBs on my host account alloted, so getting more cost me more cash. :(

What i didn't like about frapr that you have to hand in your email address to the SPAM gods, your bombarded with cookies, and it is not ad free. :(
I guess that's why it is free.

But as I can't be specific, and I want to take down the old guestmap. Just start it in frapr. Or some place else.

And I am talking to Greyling to start it in Frapr, it was her idea. I will officially abandon working on it.

Nikkie, if you'd like to give it another month or two to see if the open source thingy becomes available, then that's fine :)

I agree it's strange and annoying that one needs to register on the Frappr map with an e-mail (can't see why they would even need that), but on the plus side so far I haven't gotten any spam on the one I used to register my detective name with - *keeps fingers crossed and knocks on wood*

As for the ads, they're pretty much the same as you get if you're unsubscribed here so I don't think they're too disturbing, and at least they aren't pop-ups!! :)

No no, by all means, go set it up. I have no idea when it does come out which is still unknown, I am not sure if I have the time to implement it right away.

Oh, okay - sorry to hear it wouldn't work the way you wanted to.

It'll probably be a day or two before I can announce the Frappr map as there are a couple of things that needs adjusting :)
