Is there a way to get in good with a Faction without having to first solve a case that they would like to see solved? My first case involved me having to catch someone who killed a member of the Dies Arcanum Brotherhood. I really really dislike the Brotherhood and would much rather go and work for someone who would give me useful abilities. Is there a way to circumvent that so I can get favor with another Faction?

Not until you have a postive number with the other factions.
So, stop doing the little jobs for the DAB and quit the cases they want solved.

The game randomly assigns the some cases to be political. And it's random which factions it picks. So if you really want to change faction then quit all cases that will make your standing fall with your prefered faction. Once you have a 1 or higher standing with that faction then go to their HQ (Church, City Hall or Real Estate egency) and start doing little jobs for them each day. This makes your standing rise faster with your chosen faction AND fall quicker with the other factions.
LCN at the real estate agency offers safe cracking (only useful if you're subscribed and in an agency).
OoS at City Hall offers Hypnotism (people sometimes give you an extra suspect when you ask the other people with motives).
To get Surveillance, Underworld connections or Pugilism you need to leave NY, which you can only do if you are subscribed.

Sam, you forgot pickpocketing from the Brotherhood... Good for when people don't want to give you what's rightfully yours.
