Remember these?

For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs,

here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930s and '40s.

Before there were interstates,
when everyone drove the old 2 lane roads,

Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields.

They were small red signs with white letters.

Five signs,

about 100 feet apart,

each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet......

and the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

Here are more of the actual signs:

Those are great Makensie. I am not old enough to remember the famous Burma Shave signs but I can remember going on long drives with my parents and my dad telling us (my brother and I) about them...

My dad (who just turned last week 72) would drive us along and ramble on about all the Burma Shave signs he had seen a long time ago back when (according to him) driving was much more entertaining and less stressful. He would recite numerous sayings and my brother and I (being much too young to appreciate the lesson in history) would roll our eyes and not see the signifigance of his story. He and my mom would sit in the front seat and regail each other with those witty sayings beginning each one with "Oh and do you remember..." while we sat in the back praying that we would reach our destination quickly.

Thinking back now, I miss those times and would give anything to go back in time to the back seat of my parents car knowing and appreciating what I do now.

Thanks for digging up those memories for me Makensie i loved the trip down memory lane. I think I will call my dad. :)

awwww , well Im glad I was able to bring back good memories. :) It's amazing how when we're older we really appreciate listening to our parents talk of things past :) I know I love listening to mine talk about how it was when they were growing up. It's a treasure :)
