The city was dirty. Cold, damp and bustling with people, exactly the way it was when I left it. I'd been gone for a long time on a well earned vacation. If tracking a mob boss through the South American jungle could be called a vacation. It wasn't all bad though, I met a little Spanish dish called Roseita. Sweet lips, hips and fingertips. I spent a solid month holed up in her hacienda. It would have been paradise if she hadn't been pulling bullets out of me and changing my bloody bandages.

But now I was back, in the city that couldn't sleep, I inhaled deeply the scent of car fumes and factory smoke. Ahhh it was good to be home. I wasted no time heading to my office and as I stepped through the door I noticed the inch thick coating of dust on everything. Miss Barker had been doing her usual non-cleaning. Her name wasn't really Miss Barker, I could never remember her name. But her face looked like an English bulldog so barker fit very well.

I eased down in my chair behind my desk, parts of me were still a little sore, and picked up the newest message on the stack of messages 3 inches high. Some dame wanted to hire me to look into the murder of her rich uncle. I'd get to it.

I pulled open the top right hand desk drawer and retrieved my half full bottle of Shanghai Surprise, and pulled out the cork. Propping my feet on the edge of my desk I tipped back in my chair and looked out the dirty window then lifted the bottle in salute to the city. "It's good to be home".

Now I don't believe that for one minute!
