during a case, one of the "storyline" screens will come along. It might tell you that if you solve that particular case, your standing with one of the sects will increase while it will decrease with another sect. If you are positive with any of the sects, you can talk to the head of that group. (La Cosa Nostra in the Real Estate, Order of Socrates in City Hall, and Dies Arcanum Brotherhood in the church.) You will do jobs for them, and your standing with them will go up, while your standing with the other groups will go down. When you gain about +10 standing with one group, you can learn their special secret. Or whatever they're called. La Cosa has safecracking, and I don't know what the others have.

If you are in an agency, you can also use these sects to learn about the beginning to a treasure hunt. You will have to give them some money, and they'll tell you where to start.

We needed to get to 25 to be able to learn the secret of safe cracking - which is great for an agency to have, but not necessary except for treasure hunts. Only one or two agents need to have it.
Socrates has hypnotism, which helps you get witnesses to talk - and would probably be the most useful in general.
Dies Arcaneum has pickpocketing, which only lets you get your 'fee' back if your client did it. Usually by the time you get the points for that skill - the money from clients' fees is 'chump change'.
If you want to do treasure hunts with an agency, its important that the agency has agents in good standing with all three (that would be 3 different agents usually) so you can ask about lost treasures.
