Detective Biography

Once a New York police officer, Maddox left official police work after growing tired of men who wanted cases closed more than they wanted them solved. Maddox wanted to arrest the guilty...not decide that a suspect was guilty and then arrange the facts afterward.
Even once he became a private eye, Maddox revolted at the idea of filling his wallet with the blood of an innocent on every bill. The fact that a police officer or detective could punish the undeserving with bad work or, worse, corruption, bothered Maddox much more than it seemed to bother some. Maddox was interested in motive, alibi, witnesses, and physical evidence; everything else was just noise.
Working alone was no picnic. Maddox had bills to pay, and he no longer enjoyed the benefit of police radios, backup, crime labs, and blotters, especially since he had burned some bridges on the way out. But a string of purported gangland murders stirred up the city, prompting Maddox to contact one of the few honest officers whom he could trust. Maddox learned the police department wanted this matter closed quickly to prevent panic, and Maddox knew the department would resort to its institutional racket of protecting certain criminals for massive payouts, while putting away patsies.
But Maddox could detect a chilling atmosphere gripping the law that was being hidden from the public. He questioned some of his old informants. Bodies of gang members, some of them high-ranking in their organizations, had been found pale and strangely bloodless. Witnesses whispered about pale shadows seen after dark. Maddox wasn't often caught off-guard, but he soon learned from his informants that another detective had questioned some of them, as well. Each of them had expressed how exotic and eerily striking this detective was. They had noted the foreign detective's eccentricity, precise mannerisms, meticulous attention to detail, and unnatural politeness for someone in their part of the city.
It was only a matter of time before their paths crossed. Maddox expected another glory-seeking private eye, or perhaps somebody on a gang's payroll. Instead, he found a detective who was uninterested in convenient answers. The stranger checked details Maddox had checked, discarded rumors that could not be supported, and refused to treat a known criminal as guilty of a particular crime merely because it made the story easier. More than once, Maddox arrived at a witness only to discover that the foreign detective had beaten him to it. Irritating as that was, Maddox had to admit that whoever this person was, they were very, very good.
After weeks of investigation, Maddox worked out that every one of the drained victims could have already been condemned to death for murder, among many other offenses, without a shadow of a doubt. Yet their executions were already carried out. Still, it didn't feel like unbridled retribution or misplaced punishment. The thought bothered Maddox, but it felt... like justice.
