Detective Biography
Roxie Delane was born in 1906, on a rain-soaked Wednesday in a cramped fifth-floor walk-up near Hell’s Kitchen. Her mother, Annie, was a seamstress with iron resolve. Her father, Teddy “Tin Man” Delane, played piano in smoke-filled saloons and ran small-time cons. Roxie got her grit from one, her charm from the other.
By age 12, Roxie could read a room faster than most could read a newspaper. She’d sit quietly in her father’s poker games, watching him smooth-talk angry drunks and bookies with a wink and a lie. When he vanished one night—some said he skipped town, others said he didn’t make it out of the cardroom—Roxie picked up the slack, helping her mother keep the lights on.
She ran errands, eavesdropped for extra coin, and got a taste for secrets. Everyone had one, and Roxie had a gift for drawing them out. It wasn’t just the face or the lipstick—it was how she listened. Really listened. Cab drivers, shopkeepers, city clerks—people talked to her like she was confession and absolution wrapped in silk.
At 18, she caught the attention of Frank Devlin, a beat cop with an eye for talent. She became a trusted informant, slipping tips between the cracks of the law. But red tape bored her and the badge boys didn’t take a dame seriously, no matter how sharp her instincts were. Roxie didn’t want a desk job—she wanted the whole story, with the blood, the lies, and the truth no one wanted found.
So she went private.
By 1930, Roxie hung her own shingle: R. Delane – Private Inquiries. No brass plate, just stenciled glass on a second-floor office that smelled of cigarettes and rain. Her first client was a widow with a missing ring. Her second was a jazz singer who feared her lover wasn’t just lying—he was disappearing girls.
Word spread. She found runaways, exposed crooks in City Hall, and even cracked a cold case the cops had buried. She didn’t take every job—just the ones that mattered or paid enough to keep the lights on. And if someone got rough? Roxie could swing a lead sap with the best of them. Once broke a thug’s nose for calling her “doll.”
Her charm? Legendary. She could disarm a mobster with a smile and make a judge rethink his ruling with just a few sweet, well-timed words. But behind the red lips and soft voice was steel. Roxie took no flak, trusted slow, and played every angle like a master.
She dressed sharp, talked smart, and walked into the darkest corners of the city like she owned them. She wasn’t just a detective. She was a storm in heels, a question no one wanted to answer, and the last face a liar ever wanted to see.
In a city run by men and built on secrets, Roxie Delane made her own rules.
And heaven help the fool who thought she needed saving.
