Detective Biography

"So, what brings an esteemed neuropsychiatrist like you in the sleuthing business?" the veteran detective asked.

I remained silent and gave him an eye of contempt. The detective understood what I meant. "Alright..." He simply went back to reviewing the folders I handed him earlier.

"Ah, it's you, Dr. Blake Sade," the detective smirked after puffing his cigar. "Working for the Vatican intelligence agency as a researcher and combat behavioral analyst." The detective smiled, "Not to mention that you're a Supreme in the Society of the Broken Ba-"

"Silence," I didn't hold back, this time. I can't let him be blatant about my identity. Especially not here in Sami's restaurant. "You know very well the consequences of chatty mouths, detective."

I am usually calm and professional, even to the most unpleasant individuals. But Detective Dylan, he's the person who tried my patience the most. He was my last resort into getting the sleuthing business. As much as I'm hesitant to admit it, he was the only bridge that connects a path between me and my goals.

"Seems like you're pretty dumbstruck, doctor." His arrogant and brash tone didn't change, but I noticed him becoming more intent and formal. "Let me get this straight... It's about the Arcanum Brotherhood, huh?"

"Yes..." I shot an eye of urgency to the detective.

He looked at me for one-straight minute, as if reading my mind, before he replied, "I get it now." The detective became stiff, letting go any remark of naughtiness in his demeanor. "The Arcanum brotherhood carries the name of the Society's archnemesis and it's ran by priests. And let me guess, neither the Society nor the Vatican knows about the nature of their existence."

I'll give it to the rude detective. He may be despicable most of the time, but he's still one of the greatest sleuths in New York.

"Okay, well... I left the Society a long time ago and I'm done with all these secret wars. I'm just here for the money. Living in these days is way too expensive, don't you think?"

"I already wired your fee," I told him.

"Yep," the detective grunted as he puffed his cigar. "I guess I better start my work, then." He took the folders I gave him and secured them under his trench coat. Just before he left our table, he scratched his head and asked me, "By the way, how would you like me to fake your detective identity? You're a great doctor. But I know you also have your way with words. Read some of your novels and already heard some of your speeches, by the way."

I know what the veteran detective meant. Most who subscribe to the sleuthing business have tragic professional backgrounds that turned them into criminal-hunting-gumshoes. I reckoned that it will be better for my cover if I guise myself the same.

"Make it look like I was a disgraced doctor. It'll be more convenient and easier for me."

"Alright," the detective clicked a tongue. "You're the boss."
