Detective Biography

"Miss Sharp, is it true that you're under investigation in connection with the ghastly Streetcar murders?" a voice howled from the crowd.

I stop, one heel of my worn loafers raised to take a step. Even as I turn, my sweaty-faced assistant is rushing to herd me forward.

"Miss Sharp has no comment at this time." he called, and there is a dissatisfied hiss from the crowd gathered at the steps of Union Station, where I am about to disembark on the next train from Los Angeles to New York. I am still frozen, wanting so very badly to say what is perched just there on my tongue, but knowing my beleagured assistant will hate me for it.

I turn anyway.

"Ladies and gentlemen, what you have before you is a glowing incident of the inability of our crooked police force- hand in hand with the little gangster element in this city- contriving together to banish all means of the word 'justice'." I say hotly. "My name as a private investigator may have been dragged through the mud, broken, beaten down and set fire to...in this city. But know this. Your Dragnas and Cohens may have friends in high places, but so do I. And the funny thing about being set fire to- it separates the pigeons from the phoenix. Rest assured, ladies and gentlemen. I am the latter. And I will rise above this abhorrent indecency on the part of the law. I will have justice..."

I paused for one tiny moment, looking every reporter in the eye as if I were personally addressing him.

"...I will have justice, and I will bring it right to your doorstep."

I turned my heel on the ringing silence I left in my wake and swept into Union Station. At the end of this arduous journey lay a close family friend, powerful and ingenious, and this woman- the acclaimed Molly Maltese- woudl help me set my tattered reputation to rights.
