Detective Biography

Liam Tiernay sat at a corner table, nursing a pint of stout.

“Peter O’Neil? Yea, I guess I know a thing or two about ‘im. Bright lad. Good at heart. I found ‘im stealing loaves while sweet talking the women. No more than 15 or 16, but even then you could see the toughness in him. And willful, too.”

He threw back the last of his drink as Molly brought forth our round, then waited as she cleared the empties and moved away.

“’A wedge from itself splits the oak tree’ and so it was with the O’Neil family. Jack worked the farm and his son. He taught Peter about tending the land and the herd. Katherine was a kind, generous woman. Having lost her ability to bear, Peter was her whole life. She taught him his lessons and scriptures, right and wrong, charity and integrity. But fearing the O’Neil farm would be his cell, he struck out for the city. There I found him, begging and stealing in the streets, his pride getting the better of him and repentance far from his thoughts.

For a while, we had a good run of it, ‘til Peter’s ambition took him to the city’s more notorious circles. He did well, remaining his own man. But his friends made me uneasy, though their violent natures seldom surfaced.

Then that day she appeared in the store window, a bright silhouette against the darkness of the shop. She looked directly at him with her emerald eyes, pausing a moment to take him in. Completing her work, she flashed him a friendly smile before receding.

T'was the start of his rebirth. Not only was Elaine a vision of beauty, but her wit and intelligence challenged him in exciting new ways. For this moral church-going woman, Peter resolved to end his life of crime. And Elaine knew in that first look between them his goodness and strength. Only such a man could bring fullness to her life. A mere 4 months later found them wed and leaving the steps of St. Agnes to start their dream together.”

Liam took a deep breath, released it slowly, collected his thoughts and resumed the story.

“Seems Peter in his bliss failed on a particularly important obligation. ‘The Ram’ was not only a langer and a blackguard, but a vicious and vengeful dog as well. Peter and Elaine didn’t make it even a block. He and his biffos grabbed them and drug them deep into the alley’s darkness. Peter fought for all he was worth but the blackjack did its job; he fell to the ground in a daze. Before him lay Elaine, her green eyes staring lifelessly back at him as her blood flowed from the gash in her throat.

Beaten and left for dead I found him. His wounds healed, he regained his strength and then one day he was gone. Two weeks later he reappeared. ‘Gather you things,’ he said. ‘After tonight this city twill not be safe for either of us.

Early the next day we left, and n'er looked back.

Peter turned his skills to justice, dedicating his life to honoring the memory of Elaine's love. God willing he may one day forgive himself.”
