Detective Biography

Dear sister:

Yes, it’s been three years since our last (acrimonious) adjourn. Nonetheless, with the Patterson case, I think some further clarification is necessary.

No, I'm not in jail. I never was. Sterling is now fifteen years old. I and some others from the force found her on a street corner. Due to years of mistreatment and malnourishment, she looked far younger than her actual age of twelve.

Sometime afterward she became involved with a family who had connections that had spiraled out of control. When the daughter of said family had disappeared some time before that, they took Sterling from the streets and made her their errand-girl. When things got bad, the “parents” split and left the kid. They started telling enough people about their business in Chicago, since Don moved his whole operation and took the kid so that there weren't any loose ends. We got the evidence, but it was too late.

Why did I trick you and the others at the Talbot Foundation into thinking I was a drunken, opportunistic waif? I was undercover. CPD needed somebody unknown--yet with a connection that could be cashed in at any time--to catch a gang with a leader we simply knew as Don.

So I followed him to New York.

I was hoping not to use you as my contact since frankly I don't like you very much. There were so many ways I could've tied it up on my own or with other police detectives. But I didn't count on Don getting to you first.

Apparently you all comprised the perfect agency: rich enough to rob and small enough to get away with the dough. You PIs did well enough dealing with that. You even did well enough dealing with Don. But you didn't have the years of evidence that we compiled on him, so much that all that yet remained was to catch him before he slipped through our fingers.

You lot caught him fine. I knew if I showed up in there as my true self, though, you’d never believe me. You’d never let me leave with him. So I pretended to be a perpetually inebriated gold digger. I claimed (ludicrously) that Sterling was my child, that I basically sold her to Don and his cronies. In the end I got the criminal and lived down to your image of me. You sent me away in disgust with Don and the others in tow once they were caught. The NYPD Commissioner himself undid my handcuffs, and I can assure you that he was snickering and shaking his head as he did it. We took the gang back with us to Chicago under maximum security and booked them under all the charges.

Kidnapping and extortion would have been the charges in New York. We got them on five counts of fraud, two counts of murder in the first degree, six counts of involuntary manslaughter, six counts of forgery, four counts of assault, one count of extortion, eight counts of bribery, and seven counts of conspiracy.

Three years later, I’m coming clean because I’m quitting the force, and I don’t care if you feel betrayed. It’s just so you think fairly of me after all these years.
