My folks were living in Williamsburg when I came into the world, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We lived on Kent Street just north of the bridge aways, not far from the East River. If you've ever been to the lower East Side then you've seen the Domino's (sugar, not pizza) sign. Near that. It was a working class neighborhood and the Navy Yard wasn't too far away, so there were all kinds of people on the streets there. 

Naturally, there were lots of kids around and I became friends with a small bunch from the block. None of us were college material (as if we could have afforded it) and as we grew into our teens, school became - less important. We were always looking for a way to hustle a buck, legit at first, but as we grew older that didn't matter so much. We pulled a few heists, small stuff at first and eventually we got a little more ambitious and moved on to bigger things. 

I managed to graduate from high school without putting much effort into it and that gave me more time on to look around for a hustle. I discovered the horses. I loved to pore over the racing papers and found I was a pretty good handicapper. But even at that you don't make money making bets, you make money taking bets. So, I got hooked up with a bookie and I became his runner. 

I went around and collected the bets and money, made payoffs, and collected from the guys (and gals) who got behind on their payments. Sometimes, a little strong arm stuff was called for and before long the cops knew who I was. So I moved on. 

Somehow I wound up in the old country. I bounced around from job to job, hoping to land something legit and was making my way, but not by much. I got to know some people and tried to make myself useful to them. One guy had an exporting business and said he needed a man to go look into an operation he had in Eritrea, Africa. He no longer trusted his guy there and sent me to clean things up.

What the heck, it was the 30's and Europe was becoming an armed camp, so I went. I got things straightened out eventually and so the guy found more jobs for me. I worked for him until he was killed in a pedestrian accident; he had the bad fortune to be walking down a street that erupted in gunfire and he was hit numerous times. It was then I decided to put all my experience cleaning up his problems to work for me. I knew how the criminal mind worked. I knew how to get to the bottom of things without causing any suspicion, so I opened up my own detective agency, and things just took off from there.
