Detective Biography

Boxing was going to be my one-way ticket out of the neighborhood, and when I won my first nine fights I thought I was gonna be the middleweight champeen of the world. Then, as I was gettin' ready to go out for fight number ten, my manager sucker-punched me but good--he told me that I hadda take a dive! I was comin' in as a 10-1 cinch, so it seems that the guys in the striped suits and the diamond pins had put a big chunk of dough on the other guy.

I was young, proud, and stupid, and I wasn't gonna lay down for no one, so instead of doin' the smart thing, I knocked the bum out in the first round. Well, long story short, my prizefighting career was over and I was on the run.

Sticking up a couple of fillin' stations seemed like a good idea at the time, but my second try landed me behind bars for two long years.

After I got out, I went back to the old neighborhood and tried to figger out a way to stay outta trouble. Then a couple of friends told me that they needed some help findin' a lowlife bum who had run off with some money that didn't belong to him. I poked around a little and, well, I came through. My buddies encouraged me, and next thing I knew I had a license that made me a private gumshoe. Go figger!

Anyway, I solved a few cases, did all right, and one day I seen those guys in the striped suits again. Yeah, they remembered me, but they made nice and said if I helped them out from time to time they would let bygones be bygones and be my best friends. That was fine by me. Maybe I'm not as dumb as I used to be. Hey, you don't like it? Put yourself in my shoes before you pass judgment, okay pal?

Anyhow, I'm trying to make it work, and so far so good. Sometimes I see my new friends and do little jobs for them, nothing messy, at least not so far. And most of the time I'm on the up-and-up. Things could be worse, or anyways, I'm not complainin'.
