Detective Biography
She was a two-bit floozie, all gussied up to sell for four. I even half-remembered seeing her on the streets, years and miles ago--and the miles showed all right, if you looked past the overdone makeup, even if the years didn't. Maybe you can take the girl out of the whorehouse, but you can't take the whore out of the girl, I don't know. The expensive rags she was wearing practically had the price tags on them, and my guess was it was on credit, waiting for the insurance money.
She thought she was God's gift, so her crocodile tears didn't fool me either. I saw her glancing at me over the handkerchief she was sobbing into. No doubt trying to see if I was watching her bosom heave, so she'd know if she had me on the line yet or if she had to let a strap slip. But she was barking up the wrong tree. I love the ladies, but not every dick is a sucker for a dame. I'm not, at least not when I'm on a case.
Besides, looking at her, waiting for the waterworks to dry up--fact is, I'd stepped over better to get to my beer. All I wanted from her were names and a number. Names of people to check out, and the number of bills I'd be counting when I busted the murdering lowlife who offed this trashy broad's old man.
But money aside--after all this drama, I kinda hoped to learn that she did it, after all.
