Detective Biography

I was sitting in my cabin on a ship to Shanghai, looking at my six gun and an empty bottle of rum.

Shanghai, was a long way from my upbringing in New York, and that’s what I wanted.

Grandfather was a rich businessman, who raised me like his only son, He took me all over the world as a boy. Delhi, Cairo and London, were my playgrounds. He even took me to Shangri La once for dinner with the ambassador.

I never knew my parents, and Grandfather wouldn’t talk about them.

I graduated in 1917, a member of Skull & Bones, after the Army I was going to look after Grandfather’s business interests.

-----------

Fort Sill was where the Yale Volunteers trained. We went there because it was close to the Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery and PB wanted to send something back to the Tomb

The day after we sent the skull to Winter, the telegram came.

I was in the bar, there was an old timer there, a veteran of the “Rough Riders”, he learned to make a drink in Cuba, and he called it a Mojito. He insisted we all drink them, and I got a taste for them.

He was teaching me to make one when an Army Colonel, came in looking for me

He was handed me a telegram from Grandfather. Grandfather had talked to a friend of his, and I was being detached to serve under “Black Jack” Pershing

Black Jack Pershing was the commander of the American Expeditionary Force in the Great War. He spent time in Mexico hunting Pancho Villa. When the Kaiser approached Mexico about joining their side in the war, Black Jack, used his Mexican contacts to keep tabs on what was happening there. He lost contact with his operative and I was off to find his man.

-----------

Black Jack’s man taught me a lot, how to deal with that shady guy in most bars, how to make uncooperative merchants talk and how to examine evidence.

I spent the rest war in Mexico, making sure that Mexico never entered.

-----------

I came back to New York a changed man.

Grandfather had passed while I was in Mexico, and I went to meet his lawyer.

He gave me a letter and a box. He told me that Grandfather had put everything in a trust for me.

In the box was a well-worn six-shooter. The letter was from Grandfather. It seems that Mother fell in love with a gambler during a trip to the Wild West. After I was born, she ran off with her gambler friend. About a year later Grandfather got a box, it contained the six-shooter and a note, telling us of Mother’s death during childbirth to my sister.

-----------

I left New York the next day

I boarded a ship for Shanghai to apply what I had learned in Mexico, the shady character in the bar in New York had told me about a job opening in a new agency there.

I wanted to go someplace I had never been before. And forget about my past and just live my life.

So here I was on a ship to Shanghai, , looking at a bottle of rum and a six gun, hoping that I can teach a bar keep to make a good Mojito.
