Detective Biography
I hadn't seen him since I was a teen. In a little snug called Desmond's, between 29th&30th, there he was--the legend himself; the man who beat the peelers at their own game more than once.
"Lorcan?" I said."Lorcan Maskey?" I sidled up to the bar and ordered two Bushmills Black. It was clear that he was sticking to the Ulster motto. It didn't keep him from accepting the drink, however. I introduced myself as his one-time countryman and started talking about the old neighbourhood. Once he realised I was genuine, he loosened up.
We both left Derry for the same reasons, but where I had chosen a safe, quiet occupation, my compatriot had stuck himself back into the worst. We talked a little about his business but mostly we rehashed stories of this one and that; about the little victories among the many defeats; about the comedy and tragedy alike.
The night eventually wore down and he got up to leave. Before he could go, I grasped at his arm. I was a little drunk and I wanted so badly to make sense of all that had been said. "What does it all mean?" I seemed to say to no one in particular. He fitted on his hat, gave me an earnest look and quoted the great McGuffin. "I suppose there's a moral in it somewhere, but for the life of me, I'm damned if I can find it."
Then he was gone.
