Detective Biography
Fifteen years ago, Fate literally played a cruel trick upon him.
Almande Fate Winthrop, two months engaged to impoverished medical student David Garnil, discovered that her younger brother Andrew was falling in with the local street gangs. She and David both tried to dissuade him from continuing down that path, but Andrew persisted, insisting he would not be hurt and that his victims all "had it coming anyway". Almande fretted as she watched her brother take on more and more dangerous roles in increasingly daring exploits. Finally, without consulting David, she went to see if there was any way of scaring Andrew out of the shady life for good. She went to known members of La Casa Nostra, and bargained her time and company for an intricate set-up that would leave Andrew alive but with an extremely long time to brood over his actions in bed rest.
David caught wind of this scheme, though not of Almande's role in it, and tried his best to warn Andrew about it. Andrew brushed him off, yet David persisted, and arguing in this manner they headed right into the alley shortcut where the ambush had been set up.
David survived, with a slight limp. Andrew was caught by a stray bullet and died instantly.
Almande, grieving and raging, wanted nothing to do with David. But instead of expressing this directly, she became involved in La Casa Nostra herself and machinated endless plots to shadow David and try to ruin him. Unable to finish medical school, he learned the ways of the streets as well to defend himself. Only when another woman whose son had been harmed by La Casa Nostra approached him, looking for advice, did David Garnil realize that his medical training and street smarts had come together perfectly to hone him for detective work.
