Detective Biography

So I'm sitting across the room from Mr. Big Shot in a room full of cub reporters, waiting for my chance to go out on a real story and he says, "Get us some more coffee, Babe."

Jeez, Louise! I went to Vassar for this? Just to be a waitress for an executive Daddy could buy and sell, and he would, too, except I told him I wanted to make it on my own.

Sometimes, I should learn to keep my big mouth shut.

So, I get "Bossman" some coffee, nice and hot, just the way he likes it, and I hand deliver it---right onto his lap. He can't fire me, though, since I already quit.

I grab my purse and make it to the elevator while he's still yelling. There's enough left from my Great-Aunt Maudine's legacy to keep me in a brownstone studio until I can find some real work covering stories or solving crimes.

Yeah, that's what I'll do--solve crimes, encounter shady characters and twisted motives. I might have the makings of the great American novel here--if someone hands me a job before my bank account runs out.

*********************

My Grandpa used to say, "Even a blind pig gets a truffle once in a while."

Mine turned out to be a wrong turn into an alley where I happened on a "Accepting help--maybe--walk in if you have the nerve" sign attached to a amazingly clean and equally large dumpster. The door was ajar so I peeked in and beheld a stylish brunette rummaging through case files. I was about to back right out again, but she smiled at me and offered me some fresh-brewed tea.

New York isn't the easiest place to make friends, so I took her up on the offer, and we were still chatting hours later. To make a long story short, which is no fun but suits the city, I found myself an operative for Just Around the Corner.

By midnight, I was on my way to Shanghai to set up in the heaquarters there, solve some pending mysteries, and take care of George, the slobberingly lovable mascot bloodhound.

So far, I've cracked a few tough cases, made a connection with the Eastern Triads, and had George push me out of the way of several flying knives. I think I can safely say that I'm overworked, underpaid, and incredibly happy, even though my life's in danger at least once a day.

Still, whatever happens, I am NOT calling Daddy! (Not yet, anyway.)
