Detective Biography

Born in England, Jack Robertson led a pretty uneventful life until he decided to leave the country to start a new life in New York. Believing the streets were paved with gold, figuratively of course, he took everything he owned and took the next boat across the Atlantic. It was only once he got there that he realised that the streets were paved with pretty much the same materials as back home.

Stuck in a city with little in the way of opportunities and with no money to get out, Jack spent the next few weeks drifting from job to job until he met a man named Simon Smithers, a private investigator of thirty five years. They met in an alley in Manhattan, Jack having just finished working tables in a restaurant and Simon having just found out that the man he was following to see what he did when he left his wife at night didn't appreciate being followed. Having helped Simon out by running in to try and break it up and being punched a few times before the man decided he had said all that was needed to be said and left, the old PI showed his appreciation by offering to teach him the tricks of the trade. They both benefited from this, Simon having an extra pair of hands and Jack getting a chance to do something beyond asking whether a couple wanted to see the dessert menu.

In the six months that followed Simon took Jack on all of his cases. He showed him how to get the most out of a few minutes in a crime scene, he helped him get contacts on the police force, on the street and in some of the shadier organisations that called New York home. Only once he felt he had taught everything that he felt Jack needed to know did Simon announce his plans to retire with his wife out in the country. He believed that the work of a PI was a young mans game, so it was best to retire now rather than end up dead in an alley after going one case too far. Disappointed but understanding, Jack stayed in the city and began to work without Simon.
