Detective Biography

Plodula and Plodwyn are the daughters of the eccentric Pete "Piecey" and Irma Plod.
Irma was, frankly, a scurrilous gossip who could always find time to offer an accusation or piece of damning evidence (generally circumstantial but occasionaly she would be particularly proud to offer physical evidence) against anybody mentioned within her hearing.
Pete always regretted not being tall enough to enter the Police force and eventually came to resent the whole idea of an organised institution for law enforcement. He came to believe that the only way justice would be served would be by having lots of independent operators, all willing to investigate anything that the public was willing to pay to have investigated (such as why a strapping 6'4" Adonis would make a better policeman than a scrawny 3'11 3/4" weasel).
Fuelled by this sense of injustice, he gave up his steady job as a travelling circus freak and entered politics with the avowed intention of replacing the police force with his own system of private but publicly licensed investigators, to be known as Plodders. Politics, politicians and the public are however notoriously fickle and what he thought should be achievable in "a couple of months" actually took 27 years.
By this time Pete had already retired and what should have been his crowning glory eventually happened without him and the major part he played in this legislation was largely forgotten. He applied for one of the new licenses but was declined on the grounds of his age and he spent his declining years in a fog of bitter recriminations, misery and cheap Scotch.
The legacy of this sad, desperate and, if we're honest, desperately sad couple was that both daughters found themselves ideally suited to the opportunities presented by the adoption of the Licensed Private Investigator Bill (the term Plodder was quietly dropped).

Plodula was always told that she was an only twin, whilst her younger (by 2 weeks) sister, Plodwyn was just a normal sister. This was all the more odd because the two girls are identical in appearance. Plodwyn was also told that she was an only twin with a normal sister.
Both sisters quite happily believed this and it wasn't until they were at school that it was pointed out just how strange this actually was. It must have been this that developed their toughness, intelligence and charm because it certainly didn't come from their parents. It may also have had a bearing on their almost obsessive compulsion to discover the truth.
Both sisters have spent most of their lives trying to make sense of their relationship. Are they normal sisters but identical? Are they normal twins but born 2 weeks apart? Are they even related? Their parents have never changed what they told the girls to begin with.
To try to solve this mystery, they even employed a private investigator of their own, named Lambert Nomint but even after an exhaustive investigation, he was able to discover no more than they were. They stay hopeful.
